Has ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Begun Filming? Here’s Why We Think It May Have
Everyone knows that Disney movies, especially those falling under the Marvel brand, are kept secret — often for years. And right now is a strange time in the MCU: After Spider-Man: Far From Home, we only have a handful of titles and very little else to go off in terms of what comes next. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is said to be on that slate, but when will it begin filming? Here’s what we know.
The first two Guardians movies are beloved
Guardians of the Galaxy was, even by MCU standards, a risk. The property was scarcely known by the general population, and even comic book fanatics weren’t all that familiar with it. But luckily for the Marvel (and for us), the first movie, released in 2014, had a funny script, amazing visuals, and an energy to it that blew fans away.
The second film came along in 2017, and by this time, they had a formula to work with. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the story of the original characters but adds in a few more, and keeps what made the first one great. It also helped to set things up for Avengers: Infinity War.
For a while there, it looked like we wouldn’t get Vol. 3
After Infinity War, there were (spoiler alert), just two remaining Guardians. But we were assured Vol. 3 would still happen — that is, until July 2018, when the director of the first two films, James Gunn, was fired by Marvel after old tweets resurfaced.
Other names were floated around, and the idea was out there that they might scrap the project altogether. But in March 2019, just before the Guardians were (partially) restored to their previous form in Avengers: Endgame, Gunn was rehired, along with the announcement that Vol. 3 was a sure thing.
This Instagram post made us think GOTG3 has started filming
When Gunn was rehired, it was with the caveat that he would be able to finish filming The Suicide Squad for DC, which he was hired to do during his time away from the MCU. This meant that the timeline for Vol. 3 would be pushed back, and filming likely wouldn’t begin until 2020.
But on June 29, 2019, Karen Gillan (Nebula) posted a photo on Instagram, which she captioned “PJ/burger part with @pomklementieff #nebulaandmantis.” If these two GOTG actors are hanging out, does that mean that shooting has begun early?
But here’s why it probably hasn’t started
Despite the cute image (which could be a throwback for all we know), it’s very unlikely that Vol. 3 is in production just yet. For one thing, Gillan herself has been in Europe filming her upcoming action flick Gunpowder Milkshake for the last month. Meanwhile, Dave Bautista (Drax) has been promoting his comedy Stuber.
Another reason why they’re likely not filming now? Star Chris Pratt has been busy for the last few weeks: He married Katherine Schwarzenegger, and it looks like they just got back from their honeymoon. And Gunn himself has had several weddings to attend, including Pratt’s and that of his own brother, Sean Gunn, who has been involved in both Guardians films.
Is Thor going to be in the next Guardians movie?
In the final moments of Endgame, we see Thor join the Guardians in his “retirement,” ready to head back into space with them. So will he be along for the ride when we meet up with them once again?
Right now, there’s no word on that. Chris Hemsworth isn’t in the loop — or if he is, he’s keeping quiet for now. What we do know is that, despite the rumors, the movie will not be called Asgardians of the Galaxy, thanks to recent confirmation from Gunn.
