When Does ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Begin Filming? James Gunn Confirms Plans ‘Have Not Changed’
Filmmaker James Gunn has made an announcement. On August 4, 2020, amid delays at Disney, the Marvel Cinematic Universe favorite tweeted that his upcoming film, the third in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, has not been affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic yet. Here’s what he wrote.
James Gunn directed the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies
Gunn is perhaps best known for writing and directing Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The movies follow Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, a man from Earth who has spent most of his life living in space. He teams up with a ragtag crew of extraterrestrials, including Gamora, Rocket, Groot, Drax, Mantis, and, sometimes, Nebula.
Aside from the GOTG franchise, Gunn has worked on films such as Slither, Super, and Brightburn. He also wrote the screenplay for the live-action ’00s film Scooby-Doo and its sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. While Gunn didn’t direct the Guardians in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, he is credited as a producer.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Vol. 3 has experienced obstacles
After the success of the first two films, Gunn confirmed that Vol. 3 was on the way. The film was initially set to premiere in 2020, according to a tweet from the director himself in early 2018. However, he was then fired due to past Twitter content. After apologizing and taking a break from social media, Marvel reinstated Gunn in 2019.
By that point, things had shifted in the MCU and Gunn’s career. He had already begun filming The Suicide Squad for DC and continued to work on that project throughout the year. As fans know, these movies are typically more than a year in advance, so Vol. 3 was no longer on schedule.
Gunn says the film has not been delayed due to coronavirus
Because he is generally open with fans who ask him questions online, Gunn regularly shares his frustration with sites that peddle gossip about his films. So when a Twitter user tweeted that they had heard rumors that Vol. 3 was delayed, but would not share the links, Gunn gratefully replied with insider info.
“Thanks, friend,” he tweeted. “I can confirm that the plans for when we’re filming #GotGVol3 & when it’s being released have not changed at all over the past year & a half or so. Any rumors otherwise are false. I appreciate your caution!” Gunn also shared that The Suicide Squad is still set for an August 6, 2021 release.
What do we know about ‘GOTG 3’?
Over the past few years, Gunn has shared even more intel about the upcoming film, especially as it pertains to each character. “Rocket is a big part of what’s happening in the future,” he tweeted in April 2020. Actors like Chris Pratt and Karen Gillan are guaranteed, while Drax and Mantis could get a spinoff, according to Dave Bautista himself.
One of the final scenes in Endgame set the characters up on a search for Zoe Saldana’s Gamora. If the film picks up there, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) could be a part of the team. However, he is also set to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder. So either one is just a cameo appearance or Vol. 3 could take place at another time.
