Halsey Celebrates an Album Anniversary and the Chart Record She Didn’t Know She Broke

But her loyal fans know this and were justly rewarded for their streams and purchases with a surprise on the anniversary of Halsey’s debut album. Discover how she marked the occasion, and what impressive musical achievement she learned about in its wake.

Halsey celebrated her debut album’s anniversary with a new release

Halsey has released three studio albums. Her debut, Badlands, dropped on August 28, 2015, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. An impressive feat for a new artist, she followed this up with 2017’s Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, which debuted at No. 1, and 2020’s Manic, which also debuted at No. 2 and was the first album of the year to be certified platinum.

Ahead of her debut album’s fifth anniversary in late August 2020, Halsey surprised her fans with a new record. “Secret is out! After 5 years, we’re going back to the Badlands,” she wrote on social media. “This Friday, August 28th, I am excited to share my very first ever live album: Badlands (Live From Webster Hall)

Just days after the anniversary and live album announcement, Halsey learned she set a Billboard Hot 100 record — without even knowing it. She retweeted a Twitter fan account that revealed she “is the FIRST and ONLY female artist to have at least 3 songs chart on the Billboard Hot 100 for 50 weeks each.”

It’s even more impressive than that. Halsey has three songs that have spent more than 50 weeks (52) on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: “Closer” (her Grammy-nominated single with the Chainsmokers), “Eastside” (a collaboration with Benny Blanco and Khalid), and ‘Without Me,” the lead single from Manic.

Halsey’s response to discovering this in 2020? “holy h*ll.” To put the achievement in perspective, Taylor Swift has two songs that have spent 50 weeks on the chart. Katy Perry has one that charted for 57 weeks. Other frequent chart-toppers like Ariana Grande and Mariah Carey, who’ve broken Billboard records, haven’t released a song with this kind of longevity.

When looking at an artist’s chart history, Billboard ranks first by how long it stayed on the Hot 100, then by the song’s peak. Halsey has two No. 1 hits, “Closer” and “Without Me” (“Eastside” peaked at No. 9). The former is also one of the longest leading No. 1 hits in Billboard Hot 100 history, spending 12 weeks in the top spot.

Of her 19 total Hot 100 hits, Halsey has three more that made it into the top 10: Her collaborations with BTS (“Boy With Luv,” which peaked at No. 8) and Juice WRLD (“Life’s a Mess,” which peaked at No. 9), and her 2017 solo single “Bad at Love,” which was her first top 5 entry on the Billboard Hot 100, spending 33 weeks on the chart.
