Australian actress Margot Robbie originated the character of Harley Quinn on the big screen in Suicide Squad. The film, which was released in 2016, was part of the (semi-failed) expansion of the DCEU, and looked to bring in a host of movies about the villainous characters from DC Comics.

In the flick, Harley Quinn is a member of Task Force X, a team of inmates who the government attempts to use to do their bidding. They face the dangerous Enchantress, and many survive. At the end of the film, Harley Quinn’s lover, the Joker, breaks her out of prison.

Even before Suicide Squad was released, DC and Warner Bros. had a long-term plan for Robbie’s character. Her spinoff, Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), was announced in 2016 shortly before she was first seen on screen as Harley Quinn.

Robbie herself is also behind the flick. She serves as a producer, and was responsible for pitching it as an “R-Rated girl gang film.” She also sought to find a female director for the project, telling Collider, “I was like, ‘I love action. I love action films. I’m a girl. What, are we meant to only like a specific thing?’ So it was hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible.” Cathy Yan directed the flick.

Here’s the first trailer for the film

Now, we finally have a trailer and a first look at Birds of Prey, which is due out Feb. 7, 2020. It begins with Harley defining the word “harlequin,” before depicting her cutting off her hair post-breakup with the Joker. She says, she’s looking for “a fresh start,” adding, “it turns out, I wasn’t the only dame looking for emancipation.”

We then meet the rest of the “girl gang,” as Robbie described it, as well as Ewan McGregor‘s Black Mask and his thugs, who aren’t exactly pleased with her and her desire to protect the orphan who discovered a very important treasure of his. Check out the full trailer above.

Robbie is joined by some big names in this flick. Let’s take a look at her “dames,” from left to right referencing the above photo. First up is Detective Renee Montoya, who, in the comics, resigns from the Gotham Police Force after her sexuality is revealed. She’s portrayed by Rosie Perez, an Oscar and Emmy nominated actress who was once a co-host on The View.

Next up is Helena Bertinelli, aka Huntress, the vigilante daughter of a mafia boss. She’s played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who you may know best as Ramona Flower from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World or from Fargo Season 3. Then we have newcomer Ella Jay Basco as the Orphan, Cassandra Cain. Basco has appeared in episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and Veep.

Finally, Jurnee Smollett-Bell portrays Dinah Lance, also known as Black Canary. Smollett-Bell (the sister of disgraced Empire actor Jussie Smollett) has been acting since she was a child, appearing in series like Full House, Friday Night Lights, and True Blood.
