From the the most snide and superior of them all, Mr. Draco Malfoy, to the quirky yet infectiously lovable Professor Trelawney, each character in Harry Potter brings something unique and utterly mandatory to the table. However, some, share a vital attribute: wisdom.

While there are many characters with cleverness running through their veins and spewing from their quick-tongued mouths, this list will highlight the five most sagacious spellcasters to ever appear in a Harry Potter film.

5 Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger is not listed here because of her academic acumen or spellcasting prowess, she is on this list because she possesses a very important facet in a wise person’s repertoire: foresight.

Hermione Granger, for a very long time, knew that Harry Potter was connected to Lord Voldemort, which becomes obvious at the end of the final film. Furthermore, she had a Mary Poppins-esque magical bag ready at all times knowing that she, Ron, and Harry could wind up anywhere at any time. Wise individuals are rarely caught off guard, and they often possess an ability to perceive the truth unshrouded by fear and emotion. If this doesn’t describe Ms. Granger, what does?

4 Luna Lovegood

While Luna Lovegood may read magazines upside down and walk with the most unusual disposition, her perception of the world is unfettered; unfettered by ration, objectivism, reality, and logic. It takes a wise individual to remain open-minded to a fault. Most of us relinquish our belief in what we can’t understand once we reach adolescence.

Let us not forget, it is Luna Lovegood who realizes where Rowena Ravenclaw’s lost diadem is. She is able to so clearly see the message in the confound regarding the fact that no one living has seen it in years.

3 Minerva McGonagall

How could we leave out the master of transfiguration? The one with a heart of gold who will do anything to protect the school and her students, McGonaggal brings more than heart to the series.

Minerva McGonagall was a firm instructor, who, especially in the early films, always knew more than the students around her. However, she had a knack for keeping the deepest of secrets safe, while revealing enough to satisfy curiosities.

Minerva was also a clever one and a master of comebacks. What wise individual cannot wield a sharp-tongue when a situation demands it? Remember when she told Umbridge in Order of the Pheonix, “He has achieved high marks in all Defense Against the Dark Arts tests set by a competent teacher.”

2 Severus Snape

Severus Snape, cunning and ambitious, manages to fool the Dark Lord himself until the very end. Severus Snape sacrifices his entire life and his reputation (amongst the wizards on the right side of the prophecy), to protect Lily Potter’s son.

Severus Snape, with so much to hide, never shows an ounce of doubt or weakness. His false conviction is beyond convincing, and, through speech and action, he manages to uphold the grandest facade. Snape is shrewd and alert.

While many other wizards on this list possess a similar degree of foresight, Snape excels when it comes to interpersonal knowledge. He knows what to say to who to protect himself, and all the others he has vowed to safeguard.

1 Albus Dumbledore

Though Albus Dumbledore’s placement on this list requires no explanation, there’s never a bad time to rave about this man. He sees and understands the prophecy. He sets all the necessary plans in motion. He separates his heart from his head to guarantee that the sequence of events transpires in his favor.

Dumbledore, with style and with grace, never fails to remind readers and viewers that he has got it “under control.” Dumbledore possesses almost every trait associated with wisdom: foresight, cleverness, understanding, knowledge. He is a walking encyclopedia, but rather than just offering information, he comes stocked with guiding words from a life filled with various experiences.
