Following Disney’s casting announcement for the role of Ariel in their live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, The Hollywood Reporter stated that Harry Styles is rumored to portray Prince Eric. While nothing is confirmed yet, he may be the next actor to join Halle Bailey under the sea. Fans of the singer were excited at the news, tweeting their response.

“Now I hate to be basic but if Harry Styles plays Prince Eric I will literally become a fish,” said one Twitter user.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Styles “made his acting debut with Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama that grossed over $526 million worldwide and collected several Oscars.” Recently, the actor was one of several up for the role of Elvis Presley in a Warner Brothers film. Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula in ‘The Little Mermaid’

In an exclusive story, Variety reported that actress Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula in the upcoming film. Before Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid, the actress acted in comedy films including Spy, The Heat, and Bridesmaids.

A few Disney fans criticized the casting choice for Ursula. Some stated the character was initially modeled after the drag queen Divine and should be portrayed by a drag queen. Celebrities, including singer Lizzo, expressed that they wanted to play Ursula. Lizzo even tweeted a video of herself singing “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” The biggest controversy, however, was Disney officially casting Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle as Ariel.

Halle Bailey will portray Ariel in the Disney movie

Grammy-nominated singer and Grownish actress Halle Bailey will officially star as Ariel in Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. When she’s not acting, Bailey is often performing with her sister for their group, Chloe x Halle. Together, they’ve opened for artists like Beyoncé and sang “America the Beautiful” at the Superbowl.

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Director Rob Marshall said in a statement.

Additionally, Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda will work on this film, writing some of the music with Alan Menken. Although there is no release date, some report that Disney start production on The Little Mermaid in early 2020.
