Harry Styles Just Paid Homage to Princess Diana with a Sweater Vest

Harry Styles is known for his err, style, and now he seems to be channeling the late Princess Diana with one of his latest ensembles.

The 25-year-old worth an estimated $75 million stepped out in New York City on Nov. 12, 2019, wearing navy blue pinstriped slacks, a light blue striped shirt — both by Gucci — and a sheep sweater vest reminiscent of one Princess Diana wore on at least two occasions in the 1980s.

His Princess Diana inspired sweater

The look came as a departure from the head-to-toe Gucci clothes Styles has been known for wearing as the face of the brand. While he did wear predominantly Gucci, the bold sweater came from Lanvin, according to People. Fans were quick to identify the designer of the princess-inspired piece noting that it had been from the French brand’s Spring/Summer 2020 Men’s collection and cost $1,190.

The former member of One Direction is in town rehearsing for a Saturday Night Live appearance on Nov. 16, 2019, as the host and musical guest. His fans have been gearing up for the show since he shared the news via Instagram on Oct. 24, 2019, following the release of his first song, “Lights Up,” from his forthcoming album, Fine Line, out Dec.13, 2019.

Princess Diana’s sheep sweater

At 20 years old, Princess Diana first wore the bright red sheep-printed sweater to a polo match on Jan. 1, 1981, ahead of her royal wedding to Prince Charles in July of the same year.

She wore the photo again two years later at yet another polo match on June 1, 1983. This time instead of pairing the sweater with dark blue jeans the royal opted for a pair of white pants and coordinating red heels.

Sweaters have one big difference

There’s no denying the similarities in the sweaters. However, one detail stood out apart from the obvious difference in color and sleeve style.

Princess Diana’s knit adorned with white sheep had a black one on the chest. Looking back, it might’ve foreshadowed her time in the British royal family as being different from rest, like the proverbial black sheep. As for the “Signs of the Times” singer, his sweater only featured white sheep with blue faces.

Who first noticed the similar looks?

Rachel Seville Tashjian, a style writer for GQ, first pointed out the similarities in the sweater vests on her Instagram account, @theprophetpizza, according to Harper’s Bazaar. She shared side-by-side pictures of the late royal and Styles in a Nov. 13, 2019, post.

Styles is inspired by Shania Twain

The singer, who has become known for his sense of style, once said he sought inspiration from singer, Shania Twain, who has an estimated net worth of $350 million and is best known for her songs, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much” among others.

Ahead of the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, Styles told Entertainment Tonight he looked to the 54-year-old for fashion and music inspiration

When asked who inspired his style of music and fashion sense, Styles said, “I think both music and fashion, [my] main influence was probably Shania Twain,” before adding, “Yeah, I think she’s amazing.”
