Harvey Weinstein Slapped With New Charges of Sexual Assault
Why is Harvey Weinstein currently in jail?
Harvey Weinstein was one of the biggest movie producers in Hollywood. And his influence and power were enough to make or break an actor’s career. But in 2017, when reports and allegations of sexual assault against the mogul surfaced, an investigation was launched.
In May 2018, Weinstein was arrested on charges of rape, criminal sex acts, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct for incidents involving two separate women. In his 2020 trial, six different women testified against Weinstein. However, he maintained his innocence and claimed all of his sexual interactions were consensual.
The jury found Weinstein guilty on charges of rape and criminal sexual acts. In March 2020, the movie producer was sentenced to 23 years in prison.
The new charges against Harvey Weinstein
According to a press release from the LA County District Attorney’s Office, prosecutors are charging Weinstein with another count of sexual battery. The new charges allege Weinstein sexually assaulted a woman on May 11, 2010, at a Beverly Hills hotel.
The victim was initially interviewed by authorities in October 2019. Last month, she provided law enforcement officials with information that confirmed the alleged assault took place within the 10-year statute of limitations.
“We are continuing to build and strengthen our case,” LA County District Attorney Jackie Lacey stated in the press release. “As we gather corroborating evidence, we have reached out to other possible sexual assault victims. If we find new evidence of a previously unreported crime, as we did here, we will investigate and determine whether additional criminal charges should be filed.”
Weinstein has already started serving his 23-year prison sentence. But if he is convicted of these new charges, he could face up to 29 years in state prison.
The LA County DA also revealed that there were two other cases involving Weinstein. But both cases went unprosecuted because the victims were not willing to testify.
The disgraced movie mogul will have to be moved to LA
Currently, Weinstein is in prison in New York state. As reported by The Niagara Gazette, in late March, Weinstein was transferred from Rikers Island to Wende Correctional Facility where he tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus.
Weinstein was recently released from quarantine and is being monitored in a medical ward. But due to privacy laws, the New York State Department of Corrections hasn’t made an official statement about his health.
To face the new charges, Weinstein will have to be moved to a facility in or around LA. As stated in the LA County District Attorney’s press release, officials are currently working on getting Weinstein transferred.
“Prosecutors have initiated a request for the temporary custody of Weinstein from New York, the first of several steps in the extradition process,” the press release stated. “At this time, it is unknown when Weinstein will be transferred to Los Angeles County. Upon his arrival, he will be arraigned on the amended complaint. Once a court date is set, the public will be notified.”
