Has ‘Bird Box’ Author Josh Malerman Written Other Books?
Netflix’s Bird Box is a genuine phenomenon. The Sandra Bullock movie has posted record viewership numbers, with 45 million accounts watching it in the first week of its release, according to the streaming service.
Just in case you’re one of the few people who hasn’t seen it yet, Bird Box is a post-apocalyptic thriller where a mysterious force causes people to commit suicide when they look upon it. Bullock’s character must undertake a dangerous, blindfolded journey to bring her two children to safety.
It might sound like a rip-off of A Quiet Place, but people love it. Restaurants are hosting Bird Box dinners, the house featured in the movie has become a tourist attraction, and Netflix has had to warn people against participating in the #BirdBoxChallenge, where they try to complete daily tasks while blindfolded.
Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.

While there are rumors that Netflix might commission a Bird Box sequel, those haven’t been confirmed. In the meantime, you can get your dystopian fix by checking out the movie’s source material.
Bird Box is based on a book by Josh Malerman
Bird Box is based on a novel of the same name by Michigan-based writer Josh Malerman. The book, which was published in 2014, was Malerman’s first and received positive reviews. Since the Netflix movie was released, it’s become a New York Times bestseller. It even managed to knock Michelle Obama’s Becoming off the top of the Apple Books best-sellers list.
The movie is quite similar to the original novel, with one important difference: the ending. We won’t spoil either for you in case you haven’t seen the movie or read the book, but know that the book wraps up Malorie’s story in a slightly different way than the movie does.
Malerman has written several other books
Malerman has kept busy since his first book came out. He’s written several more novels, including Black Mad Wheel and Unbury Carol, the novella A House at the Bottom of a Lake, and numerous short stories. His newest book, Inspection, will be released in April 2019. It’s a thriller about two schools for geniuses, one where all the students are boys, the other all girls, and what happens when the children begin asking questions about the purpose of the institution and why they aren’t allowed to leave.
Malerman is also a musician. He plays in the band The High Strung, which has been releasing albums since 2000. Their song “The Luck You Got” is the theme to the show Shameless. The band’s newest album, Quiet Riots, comes out January 15.
What’s next for Malerman
In addition to a new book and album, Malerman has several other projects in the works, he revealed in an interview with Variety. He’s formed a production company and is developing more projects for film and TV, some based on his own work, some on the work of other authors. He’s also writing a pilot and a feature film script based on his previously published books. Clearly, fans of his work have plenty to look forward to.
