Has Prince Harry Purposely Distanced Himself From the Royal Family Since Marrying Meghan Markle?
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are settling in as a brand new family. Since Meghan and Harry wed, Harry has made some big changes in comparison to the way he was living when he was a bachelor. He’s been doing his best to make his life more private than other members of his family — but is he purposely trying to distance himself from the other royals?
Harry has always hated the media attention that comes along with royal life
Ever since Harry was a child, he didn’t like being at the forefront of the press the way he had always been. When Princess Diana died in a car accident in 1997, it was reported that her car was trying to outrun the paparazzi who were following her. For Harry, dealing with his mother’s death was hard enough, but believing the media had something to do with it has always made him resent the press.
In an interview with Newsweek in 2017, Harry said having to walk down the street following his mother’s casket while everyone watched him was something he could hardly believe he had to do. “I don’t think any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances,” he said. When Harry and Meghan began dating, she was immediately thrown into the media storm as well, and Harry said he hates that he can’t protect her more.
Harry divided his household with Prince William after he and Meghan wed
When Harry and Meghan started their lives together, Harry and Will decided to divide their households. Rather than working together, they would have separate teams to handle their engagements and the responsibilities that come with being a royal. Though the two still attend engagements together frequently, William’s household operates through Kensington Palace while Harry’s is through Buckingham Palace. The work Harry and Will do is very different, and Will’s role in the royal family will increasingly get more intense as he nears the throne, so it makes sense the two split their households. However, people instantly assumed it meant there was a feud between Harry and his older brother.
Meghan and Harry decided to move to Windsor Castle, away from the rest of the royals
After the royal wedding, it was announced that Meghan and Harry would be moving out of Kensington Palace and into Frogmore Cottage on the grounds of Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle is a bit further from the two family palaces in London, which the two expected to be more private than the whirlwind that is the other two residences. Harry has made it clear that he wants to try and keep his life as normal as possible. He even does his own grocery shopping and has said he wants to bring his child (or children) to and from school each day. He plans to take a front-seat role in his son’s life, and he and Meghan look as though they’ll be parenting very equally.
Harry continues to have royal duties, but he’s likely trying to distance himself from the fame of his family
It doesn’t appear that Harry is trying to distance himself from his actual family but rather from the chaos that comes with being a part of that family. Dividing his household and moving farther away were two ways to help him live a life that’s more on his terms, but inevitably it means distancing himself from his family to a degree. While Harry has plenty of love for his brother, father, and grandmother, he loves his privacy, too. Right now, he appears to be focused on his patronages and his new little family. Bringing awareness to causes he cares about through his royal duties will always be important to him, as will his relationship with his Will, Prince Charles, and the rest of the royals. But his privacy is a big deal, too, and he wants to have a bit more of that in his new life.
