The Most Hated People of 2018
Slimy politicians, social media disputes, and celebrities doing and saying awful things drew our ire in 2018. It wasn’t easy, but we narrowed down the list to the 20 most hated public figures from last year. The most condemned person was “pharma bro” himself (page 10).
1. Alec Baldwin
- A whole political party despises this impersonator.
For a guy who hates Donald Trump, Alec Baldwin sure is profiting off the president. The actor continues to appear on Saturday Night Live to do his impression of the president, which turned into a book. Baldwin also has a history of homophobic comments, so he’s easy to hate for many reasons.

5. Elon Musk
- In 2018, the cracks in Elon Musk’s facade began to show.
Musk was once known for making the world a better place. But Tesla, his automotive energy company, was hit by a racism lawsuit in late 2017. Add his attack on journalism in May 2018 and his Tesla tweet to manipulate the market in August, and he lost everyone’s trust. He had to step down from his chair on the Tesla board, although he remains CEO.

6. Paul Ryan
- Extreme views pushed Paul Ryan out of popularity.
Ryan was once a vice presidential candidate with Mitt Romney. But the former Speaker of the House became more unpopular due to his extreme agenda and unwillingness to listen to constituents. Ryan didn’t run for reelection in 2019, stating he wanted to spend more time with family. But many suspect other reasons.

7. Hillary Clinton
- The public still hasn’t forgotten Hillary Clinton’s mistakes and messages.
Hillary Clinton left the spotlight when she lost the presidency in 2016. Donald Trump’s campaign to “lock her up” produced a lot of hatred among his base. When Clinton pops up in the news, the animosity on the internet gets louder. Given the average age of those who despise Hillary, she’ll eventually move off this list. But for now, she remains a “most hated.”

8. Jimmy Kimmel
- Jimmy Kimmel’s anti-LGBTQ comment and sympathy toward Roseanne Barr didn’t help his case.
The host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! isn’t afraid to fly his liberal flag. Many people enjoy Kimmel’s comedy and willingness to challenge politicians. But, in 2018, he made a comment about Sean Hannity that was insensitive toward the LGBTQ community. He apologized, but then expressed compassion for Roseanne Barr after her racist tweet, which alienated fans.

10. Martin Shkreli
- People everywhere celebrated when Martin Shkreli went to jail.
In 2018, Shkreli was finally sentenced to seven years in jail and cried all the way there. In addition to jacking up the price of life-saving medicine — which is technically legal — the “pharma bro” committed securities fraud. For both reasons, he’s one of the most hated people in America.

11. Tristan Thompson

Social media attacked; Khloe forgave him; and then he was caught cheating again a year later — with a close family friend.

12. Tomi Lahren
- She came to prominence as an outspoken, right-wing pundit.
Tomi Lahren exited Glenn Beck’s The Blaze network (with a lawsuit) to be a Fox News correspondent. Another upsetting incident involves a 2018 photo where she has a handgun down the front of her pants.
Next: America’s most universally hated politician
13. Mitch McConnell
- The Senate Majority Leader’s redeeming quality is that he looks like a turtle, and turtles are neat.
Alongside Paul Ryan, McConnell has pushed for massive tax breaks for the wealthy and the demolition of healthcare laws protecting Americans. According to Mother Jones, nobody likes him. Among Democrats, McConnell is reviled. Among Republicans, he’s also extremely unpopular.
Next: People are sick of her “perfect life.”
14. Gwyneth Paltrow
- She makes the list due to her out-of-touch suggestions and unwarranted life advice.
Gwyneth Paltrow is a beacon for wealthy, white women who despise preservatives in food and pay $95 for a t-shirt. The Iron Man actress runs a lifestyle website that sells ridiculously priced items. Paltrow has also said she’d rather smoke crack than eat Cheez Whiz, so she’s kind of hard to love.
Next: The face of the NRA
15. Dana Loesch
- She isn’t afraid to drum up fear to push a corporate agenda.
It doesn’t matter where you sit on gun control. You can’t deny that the NRA becomes more unpopular each time it fights common-sense law changes. Dana Loesch is the public face of the organization, which donates millions of dollars to politicians. In 2017, Loesch ran an ad in 2017 that brought her to prominence, basically calling for civil war in the U.S. Lovely.

16. Donald Trump
- Is it all that surprising that he’s one of the most-hated of 2018?
Many thought it wouldn’t be possible for George W. Bush to redeem himself, but even Democrats miss the days of George in 2019. Even if you love Donald Trump, you know he’s one of the most hated people of 2018. He attracts hate — something he’s actually proud of. After all, what would Donald Trump be without his famous list of haters?

18. Laura Ingraham
- She just couldn’t stay away from bashing a mass shooting survivor.
In defense of the NRA and all the money they have tied up in conservative politics, Fox News has gone out of their way to discredit victims that fight back in the wake of mass shootings. That includes host Laura Ingraham, who went after Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg. Ingraham mocked Hogg for venting his frustration for failing to get into a handful of colleges.
The general public — and a whole lot of Ingraham’s sponsors — found the attack distasteful, and she was forced to apologize and take a brief hiatus from her show. She’s back now, but the damage is done.

19. Harvey Weinstein
- The #MeToo movement took down this movie producer.
Once a major movie producer, Harvey Weinstein became a household name thanks to the #MeToo movement. Weinstein pleaded not guilty to rape charges in June, but the amount of evidence that has mounted against him has already swayed the court of public opinion.

20. Kathleen Kennedy
- People blame her for their problems with Star Wars.
Kathleen Kennedy is the highest-ranking executive at Lucasfilm, which was purchased by Disney back in 2012. Under her direction, the company has churned out four live-action movies and several other shows, novels, and comics. But while Star Wars continues to be a major money-maker for Disney, not everyone has been happy about Kennedy’s attitude toward the diehard fans.
She has made it clear at times that she doesn’t really care what existing Star Wars fans want, choosing instead to forge ahead with a plan that wasn’t exactly well-thought-out from the start. Production problems dogged the two anthology movies, and three directors have been fired before completing their assigned project. Star Wars has a massive fanbase, which helps nudge Kennedy onto the most-hated list.
