The Most Hated People of 2018 (So Far)
We’ve gotten off to a rocky start in the first half of 2018. Social media beefs, slimy politicians, and celebrities doing and saying awful things have drawn our ire. It wasn’t easy, but we were able to narrow down the list to just 20 of the most hated celebrities so far in 2018. That includes a cable news correspondent (page 9), an extremely popular political target (page 18), and a sports star that angered the masses (page 15).
Check out our list, starting with “pharma bro” himself.
1. Martin Shkreli
- Decent people everywhere celebrated when he went to prison.
It wasn’t quite 2018 when “pharma bro” Martin Shkreli became big news, but it was 2018 when he was finally sentenced to seven years in prison. That came in March, and Shkreli cried while the sentence was handed down. You may remember him for being the guy that unnecessarily jacked up the price of a potentially life-saving medicine.
But in reality, gouging people that badly need medicine is perfectly legal. The only reason Shkreli got what was coming to him was because he committed securities fraud — AKA, he misled wealthy investors about how much money he handled. Even still, he is one of the most hated people in America.
Next: The most-hated quarterback
2. Tom Brady
- Success brings out the haters.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is going to be on the list of “most hated” people from now until he finally exits the spotlight. Brady’s team finished with the best record in the AFC this last season, so of course, they were back playing in the Super Bowl in February. The QB entered the game with five rings, including one from last year when he drove the Patriots to a comeback win over the Atlanta Falcons.
But fortunately for fans of the Philadelphia Eagles — and Tom Brady haters everywhere — the Patriots lost the game. Even still, the 40-year-old Brady is wealthy, he’s married to a supermodel, and he hardly ever loses. It’s easy to hate him.
Next: A YouTuber
3. Logan Paul
- He made a huge mistake on social media.
Logan Paul is best known for his YouTube page, but got into some trouble early in 2018 for something that he showed. Paul went with his camera into the Aokigahara Forest, known as the “Sea of Trees,” which happens to be a popular place for people to commit suicide. It was there that he encountered a body, and unfortunately discovered the person to be dead.
But rather than alert the authorities and move on, Paul loaded his video to YouTube. It caused a storm of reactions, and Paul eventually took it down and made an apology (although it rang pretty insincere). The entire incident, in addition to his existing social media persona, makes Logan Paul one of 2018’s most hated.
Next: A film executive
4. Kathleen Kennedy
- People blame her for their problems with Star Wars.
Kathleen Kennedy is the highest-ranking executive at Lucasfilm, which was purchased by Disney back in 2012. Under her direction, the company has churned out four live-action movies and several other shows, novels, and comics. But while Star Wars continues to be a major money-maker for Disney, not everyone has been happy about Kennedy’s attitude toward the diehard fans.
She has made it clear at times that she doesn’t really care what existing Star Wars fans want, choosing instead to forge ahead with a plan that wasn’t exactly well-thought-out from the start. Production problems dogged the two anthology movies, and three directors have been fired before completing their assigned project. Star Wars has a massive fanbase, which helps nudge Kennedy onto the most-hated list.
Next: A prejudiced innovator
5. Elon Musk
- No, go ahead and say what you’re thinking.
At one time, Elon Musk was publicly viewed as a billionaire with the will to make a better world — or failing that, help us find a new, better world. Musk is known for his company, Tesla, as well as SpaceX. The former makes expensive cars, while the latter is trying to find solutions to get mankind to Mars in the next few years.
But Musk apparently has some problematic issues with race, as evidenced by the racism lawsuit that hit Tesla late in 2017. Add to that his attack on journalism in May 2018 and his on-going battle against labor unions, and Musk has found himself to be extremely unpopular.
Next: An unpopular speaker
6. Paul Ryan
- He has become unpopular enough that he won’t run for office again.
Paul Ryan was once a popular politician, as a representative from Wisconsin and a former vice presidential candidate in 2012 with Mitt Romney. But the Speaker of the House has become increasingly more unpopular as time has gone on, thanks to his extreme agenda and unwillingness to listen to his constituents and the American people.
Ryan’s constant attempts to cut taxes for the super-wealthy and overturn Obamacare, in addition to his dream of one day abolishing Medicaid, paint him as a ghoul. He has become so unpopular that he won’t even run for reelection.
Next: Another unpopular politician
7. Hillary Clinton
- Despite exiting the public spotlight, she still has a whole lot of haters.
Hillary Clinton pretty much exited the public spotlight when she came up short in electoral votes in November 2016. Donald Trump’s campaign to “lock her up” had stirred up quite a bit of hatred among his base, and nothing that has happened in the nearly two years since the election has changed that. Any time Clinton pops up in the news, the animosity on the internet and in media only gets louder.
Given the average age of those who truly despite Hillary, she’ll eventually move off the list through natural causes. But for now, she remains a “most-hated.”
Next: An outspoken TV host
8. Jimmy Kimmel
- He’s not immune to making the occasional faux pas.
Jimmy Kimmel, the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, isn’t afraid to let his liberal flag fly on TV. For his honesty and willingness to challenge politicians, many people appreciate Kimmel’s brand of comedy. But that doesn’t mean he’s perfect. In April, Kimmel made a comment about Sean Hannity that was unintentionally insensitive toward the LGBTQ community.
He later apologized, but then expressed compassion for Roseanne Barr in the wake of her racist tweet scandal. Whether he was right or not to show sympathy for a friend that he clearly believes has some mental health issues is beyond the point. Kimmel has easily made the most-hated list for 2018.
Next: A Fox News correspondent
9. Tomi Lahren
- She came to prominence as an outspoken, right-wing pundit.
Tomi Lahren rose up in the media on The Blaze, a media network run by Glenn Beck. She has since exited the network (with a lawsuit) and become a correspondent on Fox News, which seems like a natural progression. Her most famous rants involve standing up to Colin Kaepernick, who started a movement of kneeling to protest against police brutality.
Lahren has accused of being intentionally dense, playing a character to pander to the lowest common denominator. That includes a March 2018 photo in which she had a handgun stuck down the front of her pants.
Next: An out-of-touch actor
10. Alec Baldwin
- He has a history of making cringeworthy comments.
For a guy who supposedly hates Donald Trump, Alec Baldwin sure is having a good time profiting off the president. The actor keeps taking his turns on Saturday Night Live to do his impression of the president, which eventually turned into a book. Baldwin is kind of a blowhard with a history of making homophobic comments, so he’s really easy to hate for a lot of reasons.
Next: Another Fox News personality
11. Laura Ingraham
- She just couldn’t stay away from bashing a mass shooting survivor.
In defense of the NRA and all the money they have tied up in conservative politics, Fox News has gone out of their way to discredit victims that fight back in the wake of mass shootings. That includes host Laura Ingraham, who went after Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg. Ingraham mocked Hogg for venting his frustration for failing to get into a handful of colleges.
The general public — and a whole lot of Ingraham’s sponsors — found the attack distasteful, and she was forced to apologize and take a brief hiatus from her show. She’s back now, but the damage is done.
Next: An egocentric rapper
12. Kanye West
- It was easy for many to ignore his ego until recently.
Kanye West has always been an egomaniac, but many simply overlooked it because they liked his music. After all, the only person he was harming was Taylor Swift, right? That is, until he became more and more publicly supportive of President Trump. A lot of West’s fans aren’t enamored with the president, and understandably so considering his track record on race. Suddenly, those who were once West’s biggest supporters aren’t feeling the love.
Next: She’s so exhausting
13. Gwyneth Paltrow
- She makes the list due to her out-of-touch suggestions and unwarranted life advice.
Gwyneth Paltrow has become a shining beacon for the out-of-touch, wealthy, white mom with nothing better to do than pay $95 for a white t-shirt and complain about preservatives in food. That’s pretty much what she does, running her own lifestyle website which sells ridiculously priced items. Paltrow has also said that she’d rather smoke crack than eat Cheez Whiz, so there’s that too. She’s kind of hard to love.
Next: America’s most universally hated politician
14. Mitch McConnell
- His only redeeming quality is that he looks like a turtle, and turtles are neat.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has struggled to feel the love in recent years. Alongside Paul Ryan, he has pushed for massive tax breaks for the wealthy and the demolition of healthcare laws protecting Americans. According to Mother Jones, nobody likes him. Among Democrats, McConnell is reviled. Among Republicans, he’s also extremely unpopular. Can anyone explain why the state of Kentucky keeps sending this guy to Congress?
Next: Once a cheater …
15. Tristan Thompson
- You don’t mess with Americans and their favorite reality stars.
For some reason, a very large portion of the American public cares about what’s going on with the Kardashian family. That includes Khloe Kardashian, who has been dating Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Tristan Thompson. But early in 2018, just before the couple welcomed their first child, a video surfaced that apparently showed Thompson cheating. Social media attacked him, turning him into one of 2018’s most-hated instantly.
Next: All it took was a tweet
16. Roseanne Barr
- She blamed Ambien for a racist tweet that ended up taking down her sitcom.
Roseanne Barr was on top of the world in the first few months of 2018. Her legendary sitcom, Roseanne, had seen a successful revival at ABC following 20-plus years off the air. The ratings were good, and the network had already elected to pick up the show for another season. But then she went and tweeted while on Ambien, which apparently let out her more racist side.
The sitcom queen saw her show immediately get canceled, and now it appears that ABC is looking to fill the time slot with a spinoff that would essentially feature the regular cast sans Barr. Not a good time to be Roseanne.
Next: The face of the NRA
17. Dana Loesch
- She isn’t afraid to drum up anxiety and fear to push a corporate agenda.
It doesn’t matter where you sit on the gun control debate. It would be impossible to deny that the NRA becomes more and more unpopular among Americans every time they push back against even the most common-sense law changes. Dana Loesch has been the public face of the organization, which donates millions of dollars to politicians each year. She ran an ad in 2017 that brought her to prominence, basically calling for civil war in the United States. How lovely, right?
Next: His approval rating is low
18. Donald Trump
- Is it all that surprising that he’s one of the most-hated of 2018?
Again, this isn’t necessarily a partisan debate. Even if you love Donald Trump and think he has been sent by Jesus to do the Lord’s work, you also know that he’s one of the most-hated people of 2018. Just by his nature, Trump attracts hate — it’s something he’s actually proud of. What would Donald Trump be without his famous list of haters?
Will Trump ever leave this list? Many thought it wouldn’t be possible for George W. Bush to redeem himself in the public eye, but even Democrats are missing the days of W. here in 2018. You never know what the future holds for Trump’s popularity.
Next: He deserves the hate
19. Harvey Weinstein
- The #MeToo movement took down this movie producer.
Once a major movie producer, Harvey Weinstein became a household name thanks to the #MeToo movement. There are countless women that have come forward against Weinstein and his misconduct, which has ranged from sexual harassment to actual, forcible rape. Weinstein pleaded not guilty to rape charges in June, but the amount of evidence that has mounted against him has already swayed the court of public opinion.
Next: Another famous rapist
20. Bill Cosby
- Once a beloved comedian, he now faces the prospect of dying in prison.
The case against disgraced actor and comedian Bill Cosby has been building over the last few years. But it wasn’t until May 2018 that he was finally convicted on three counts of indecent assault, which could mean anywhere up to 30 years in prison for the 80-year-old. Even if the prison time is significantly less, which seems likely, Cosby still may spend the majority of his remaining time on Earth locked behind bars.
Considering that he’s one of the most-hated men in America, nobody is crying for him.
