The Heartbreaking Reason Prince Harry Is So Protective of Meghan Markle and Archie

It’s no surprise that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle want to provide privacy for their son, given their status in the royal family, but Harry’s desire to protect his son came far before Archie arrived on the scene. His need to be protective reportedly originated from his childhood, as he has had to live his entire life in the public eye.

The heartbreaking reason that Prince Harry is so protective

The reason behind Prince Harry’s protective nature was revealed in The Royals documentary series from 2013, in which Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty Magazine, shared that the death of Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, had a huge effect on him and Prince William.

She explained: “They hated their mother’s celebrity life and they grew to really hate the photographers that were always surrounding her.”

Seward added that it’s admirable the way the princes have been able to handle the media since their mother’s passing in 1997, as she explained: “It’s quite to their credit they are able to be vaguely polite to the press now because they still loathe them. They still blame the press for their mother’s death, which they would do.”

Harry wants to protect Archie

Given that history, it’s understandable that Prince Harry would want to shield his son from the limelight and he and Meghan Markle have been diligent about the limited exposure of Archie to the public — including their recent private christening.

A royal insider explained to Daily Express that, “with the exception of his time in the forces Harry has lived his entire life in the goldfish bowl of public scrutiny.” The source further shared: “And, although he recognizes his duty, he is fiercely determined to protect his newborn from the glare of public opinion which he has had to bear — which became especially oppressive when he lost his mother Diana.”

As a result, the insider shared: “Harry is fiercely protective of Archie and has promised him he will never have to go through that. Of course Meghan, who has lived a large part of her life in front of cameras, agrees wholeheartedly. He’ll basically protect Archie with his life.”

Harry enjoyed his break from the media

In 2008, when Harry was in Afghanistan as an officer in the Army, he explained how being away from the spotlight suited him, noting, “I don’t want to sit around in Windsor. But I generally don’t like England that much and, you know, it’s nice to be away from all the press and the papers.”

In 2017, Harry shared that his ten-year career in the Army was an “escape” from his royal life, telling the Mail on Sunday that when he was in the Army he was “just Harry,” adding that it was “the best escape I’ve ever had.”

He’s been protective of Markle as well

When he and Markle were dating, Prince Harry was very protective of her privacy, with his office issuing a statement that said, in part: “Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.”

The statement further explained: “It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows that it is unusual to issue a statement like this, but hopes that fair-minded people will understand why he has felt it necessary to speak publicly.”
