Helena Bonham Carter Reveals What It’s Like Dating a Man 21 Years Younger
Helena Bonham Carter became a global icon through her work with her husband, Tim Burton. The pair split in 2014 and now Carter is dating a writer named Rye Dag Holmboe. Their relationship raised a few eyebrows because Holmboe is 21 years younger than Carter. Here’s what she had to say about her boyfriend.
Helena Bonham Carter loves her new relationship
Another celebrity might be a touch defensive when discussing their May/December relationship. However, Carter seemed both happy with her relationship and happy to talk about it. According to Yahoo Celebrity UK, the actress said that she is having a lot of fun with her new boyfriend.
Carter said “Everybody ages at a different rate. My boyfriend is unbelievably mature. He’s an old soul in a young body, what more could I want? People are slightly frightened of older women, but he isn’t. Women can be very powerful when they’re older.”
How this connects to her role in ‘The Crown’
Carter will have a prominent role in the Netflix series The Crown. The Crown centers on the trials and travails of Britain’s royal family. Carter is set to play Princess Margaret, a royal who is often remembered for her romance with a gardener who was 17 years her junior.
Carter and Princess Margaret both began relationships with younger men after their marriages broke down. Carter sees the connection between her personal life and Princess Margaret’s, commenting “It’s strange, though. It was odd timing that I seem to have a similar age gap as her, but I think it would have happened whether I was playing her or not.”
How this affects her children and her art
MSN reported that Carter is happy about the relationship that her new boyfriend has with her two children with Burton – Billy, 11, and Nell, 16. She said that the relationship “won’t work unless the other person realizes he’s got to have different, separate relationships with the children as well.”
Carter added “One thing about my boyfriend, he’s always thought he mustn’t represent a loss to my children, they mustn’t think his presence means they’re going to lose their mum on some level. He’s tried to forge – and very successfully – his own relationship with them and not be another father.”
The actress further reflected on her divorce from Burton, adding “They don’t need another father. Tim is such a one-off – and actually Rye is such a one-off. That’s the rich thing about divorce, it doesn’t have to be catastrophic because as long as they know they’re loved and they’ve got an essential sense of self, a lot about life is trying to deal with lots of people.”
At this moment, Carter and her boyfriend seem to have a good relationship. Carter was known for working with her husband in numerous films, including Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Dark Shadows, and Corpse Bride. It will be interesting to see if Carter will ever star in a film, play, or television series based on a book by her current boyfriend.
