Here’s How to Watch YouTube Movies for Free Online

When you think of YouTube, movies probably aren’t what first comes to mind. But if you’re looking for something to watch, the online video platform might be the perfect place to look.

Did you know you can buy and rent movies on YouTube? Most of them are about the same price you’d find them on any other digital service (iTunes, Amazon Prime). But there are a few exceptions.

Not sure what to watch this weekend? There are a select number of movies you can watch on YouTube absolutely free. Here’s how.

‘YouTube Movies’ is the YouTube channel you didn’t know you needed

YouTube is notorious for its creator-driven channels (think PewDiePie or that seven-year-old who gets paid millions of dollars to review toys). That’s what it was originally built for: average people who had the option to upload their own videos onto the internet.

What started in 2005 as a “you make it” platform has evolved significantly over the past 13 years. Many studios and brands now have their own channels on which they post TV show clips and other videos made specifically for marketing their products.

But Google (which owns YouTube) now uses the platform for another service: video rentals, TV show streaming, and more.

YouTube Movies is the channel that houses the licensed content, new and old, you might be looking for. You can even pre-order titles that aren’t available for digital streaming yet (as in, they’re still in theaters but won’t be for much longer).

There are a lot of places to watch movies online, but there aren’t many (legitimate) online platforms to find free movies. Though their selection is what you’d expect from an online free movie collection — sorry, no Deadpool or Disney — it’s still worth checking out.

Free YouTube movies you can watch right now

YouTube recently made a portion of its digital movie library completely free — and there are some worthwhile gems worth watching — either again or for the very first time.

Some notable titles include:

  • Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2
  • The Terminator
  • All Dogs Go to Heaven (but not the sequel, for some reason)

The free library also includes a few documentaries about everyone’s favorite real-life royals, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. They’re there for your viewing pleasure if you ever need more background on these beloved modern-day “princesses.”

Head over to the YouTube Movies channel and scroll down to their free movies selection. You just might find something you’ll enjoy.

Do you need a YouTube Premium subscription to watch movies online?

YouTube Premium is the “Netflix” of YouTube. While videos are normally available for anyone to watch online, there are usually ads before, after, and/or during each one. A YouTube Premium account allows you to watch videos ad-free, along with many other bonus perks for just $9.99/month.

You don’t need a paid subscription to watch YouTube’s selection of free movies. You don’t technically need a premium account to buy or rent movies on YouTube that aren’t free. These movies are available to anyone who really needs to rewatch Agent Cody Banks or its sequel (yes, there was a sequel).
