Here’s What Andrew Scott, AKA the ‘Fleabag’ Hot Priest, Is Doing Next
The talented Mr. Andrew Scott has an exciting role in the works. After his turns in Fleabag and Black Mirror in 2019, he’s set to become a major breakout star in the U.S. Here’s a look back at his career so far, his recent Emmy win, and what he is working on next.
How did Andrew Scott become famous?
The Irish actor got his start in the mid-’90s, primarily in the UK. He had a small role in the 1998 film Saving Private Ryan, which earned him a role in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. Of course, he continued to appear in many films, TV series, and plays as well.
But Scott’s breakout role came in 2010, when he was first seen as Jim Moriarty in the BBC series Sherlock. The actor reprised the role throughout much of the show’s run. From there, he was cast in films like Victor Frankenstein and Alice Through the Looking Glass.
He made a splash as the ‘Hot Priest’ in ‘Fleabag’
While most came to know him as Moriarty, it wasn’t until this year that Scott began to make major waves. He starred in Season 2 of the Amazon Prime Video series Fleabag, opposite creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Known simply as The Priest (or, ‘The Hot Priest‘ to most), Scott’s character enters the picture when he’s asked to marry Fleabag’s father and godmother. However, the two characters form a connection that tests both of them as they attempt to resist their attraction to one another.
Scott received a special nod from Phoebe Waller-Bridge at the 2019 Emmys
As you likely know by now, Fleabag did very well at the 2019 Emmys. Waller-Bridge won for Outstanding Lead Actress and Outstanding Writing In A Comedy Series. Additionally, director Harry Bradbeer won for his work, and the season as a whole won for Outstanding Comedy Series. When Waller-Bridge gave her final speech, she specifically called out Scott.
“Season 2 would not have happened or exploded in the way that it did if it wasn’t for Andrew Scott,” she said. “who came into our Fleabag world like a whirlwind and gave a performance of such depth and complexity that just elevated the whole thing for all of us. So thank you for trusting us and coming in and doing all that for us.”
He has his next big project lined up
Hot off his Emmy win for the Hot Priest, Scott has booked an exciting new role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s set to portray Tom Ripley in an upcoming Showtime series based on the novel series The Talented Mr. Ripley, which was previously adapted into a 1999 film starring Matt Damon.
“We are so thrilled to have the supremely talented filmmaker, Steve Zaillian, adapt the singular saga of Tom Ripley from Patricia Highsmith’s novels as an ongoing series for Showtime,” said Showtime president of entertainment Gary Levine. “With Andrew Scott, whose charisma knows no bounds, inhabiting the iconic lead role, we feel confident that this will be a special one.”
