Here’s Why Sofia Vergara Kept Her Cancer Diagnosis a Secret

Sofia Vergara might seem to have an amazing life, but she’s actually experienced a great deal of tragedy.

The Colombian actress is best known for her role as Gloria in the hit TV show Modern Family, but she had a difficult road to success. From family turmoil to battles that have raged in her personal life, Vergara has fought hard for the happiness that she now has with her husband, Joe Manganiello.

Possibly the most traumatic incident that Vergara has endured so far is the struggles with her health – read on to see how she survived a trying time in her life.

What tragedy has Vergara experienced with her family?

Vergara grew up in a large Colombian family, one of five siblings. She was very close with her family while growing up, and her father’s job as a cattle rancher meant that the family enjoyed financial prosperity.

Unfortunately, it was this prosperity that caused some members of the family to become a target for less-than-savory characters. Sofia Vergara had already gotten her start on a Latin American TV show and was hard at work filming new episodes when she heard some terrible news. Her older brother, Rafael, had been shot while out walking.

Vergara later opened up and admitted that her brother normally traveled with bodyguards but made the mistake of going out alone one day — and that ended up costing him his life.

Vergara’s younger brother, Julio, has also gotten into trouble, though not in the same way as Rafael. In 2011, it was revealed that Julio was being exported to Colombia due to multiple drug-related arrests. Vergara has not commented on her brother’s legal troubles, but it seems likely that she was troubled over the issues that her younger sibling has experienced.

What health problem has Sofia Vergara suffered from?

In the year 2000, years before she struck gold as Gloria Pritchett on Modern Family, Vergara was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Vergara immediately underwent surgery and started a rigorous round of medication to combat the aggressive disease.

Fortunately, she was able to beat cancer, but she still has to take a daily medication that works to regulate her metabolism.

Vergara didn’t go public with her cancer battle until 2011. She admitted that she didn’t want publicity as a result of the disease and that fighting cancer was hard enough without the additional problems of the press and public scrutiny to deal with.

Vergara also said that ultimately, she feels “very lucky,” since she was diagnosed young and many women don’t find out about the disease until menopause – and by then, for many, it is too late.

How is Sofia Vergara today?

Happily, these days Vergara is happy, healthy, and as far as anyone knows, cancer-free. She started dating actor Joe Manganiello in 2014 and the two fell head over heels for each other, in spite of the fact that Manganiello is several years younger than Vergara.

The super-photogenic couple got engaged in December 2014 and got married almost a year later, in Palm Beach, Florida.

While rumors continue to swirl about whether or not the two could end up welcoming a baby together, for now at least, the couple continues to enjoy their time together.

Vergara and Manganiello will be sharing the screen for the first time in their careers in their brand-new film, Bottom of the 9th, with Manganiello playing a former baseball pro looking for a shot at redemption and Vergara playing his super-supportive girlfriend.

From comedic actress to Pepsi commercial babe, audiences love Sofia Vergara. Here’s hoping that she continues to remain in good health.
