HGTV’s Christina Anstead Shares Why She Considers Her New Baby the ‘Hardest’ of Her 3 Kids

Christina Anstead of HGTV’s Flip or Flop and Christina on the Coast is navigating her way through life with three kids and a demanding career. Welcoming son Hudson London Anstead with husband Ant Anstead on September 6, the newborn is Anstead’s third child, joining her two children Taylor and Brayden from her previous marriage to Tarek El Moussa.

The reality star has been open about her challenges with her infant son, recently revealing that he can be the most spirited of her kids.

Honest on Insta

In October, Anstead posted an update on life with three children, sharing that she had no interest in any pretenses of perfection. “Newborn life is hard. It’s not all instagram filters of perfection that people put out there. F that,” she revealed. “That’s so misleading for new moms. I haven’t been online or posting much because my hands are full – literally. Hudson is definitely a tough baby.”

The Flip or Flop host wanted to keep it real when she described what’s involved in the daily care of a fussy infant. “He will sometimes cry for hours straight,” Anstead wrote. “We have had trouble with sucking (checked for tongue tie / lip tie) those were fine. Cut out dairy, tried colic calm, he doesn’t spit up so prob not reflex. What works is him tightly double swaddled in a dark cool room with very loud white noise.”

Anstead also referenced trying to balance her older children and their schedule while tending to their baby brother, giving a shout out to fellow moms of many. “Hudson’s choice of spending his time is very unrealistic when we have a crazy 4 year old running around who definitely needs attention as well as a 9 year old girl who one-on-one time is her love language,” she shared. “I say this with mad props to all stay at home moms / moms with more than 2 kids. Being outnumbered is no joke.”

I was dropping Tay off at school this morning with a screaming Hudson in the car (and I looked like a hot mess which is the norm the past 6 weeks) when she said something that really hit home. She said mom, do paparazzi still follow you around. And I said no not lately. Why? She said well what if they got a photo of you looking like THAT I’m like I wouldn’t care, that’s the least of my worries … this is how I look and I’m still out and about, this is how new moms look. And she sort of pondered that and said she wants three kids and I have to live with her so I can watch them. Well glad these past 6 weeks haven’t scared her off from babies lol. Newborn life is hard. It’s not all instagram filters of perfection that people put out there. F that. That’s so misleading for new moms. I haven’t been online or posting much because my hands are full – literally. Huds is definitely a tough baby. He will sometimes cry for hours straight. We have had trouble with sucking (checked for tongue tie / lip tie) those were fine. Cut out dairy, tried colic calm, he doesn’t spit up so prob not reflex. What works is him tightly double swaddled in a dark cool room with very loud white noise…. I say this with mad props to all stay at home moms / moms with more than 2 kids . Being outnumbered is no joke. I go back to work in 2 weeks so it’s about to get even more crazy around here. I’m lucky because one of my best friends, Shannon @pinkdustcosmetics , is a new mom too and she does my hair and makeup at home before work and we get to have a one hour therapy/vent session, and I know this is a luxury. So when you see me looking decent on tv know that I probably had a freaking crazy morning and it is what it is. I’m lucky because I do love my job and I’m excited to start some new episodes of #christinaonthecoast Sorry for the long post- Wish us all luck. It takes a village lol.

On Hudson’s time

Anstead, who is also stepmom to Amelie and Archie (Ant’s two children from a previous marriage), commented that Hudson tends to be a homebody, which can make the family’s demanding schedule tough to keep.

“He still really just likes being in the house,” she recently told Us Weekly. “He doesn’t like going out. As a very busy family, that’s been very difficult.”

The Christina on the Coast star is seeing improvements since Hudson reached a milestone. “Since he hit the 3-month mark, he’s been doing a lot better,” Anstead revealed. “A lot more smiles and coos and sleeping better, so I think we’re on the right track.”

In a good place with ex

Co-hosting the hit HGTV series Flip or Flop with ex-husband El Moussa, Anstead feels the two have developed a healthy relationship as business partners and parents more than three years since their breakup.

“It’s definitely gotten a lot easier,” she said. “The kids love seeing us sit together and that’s what’s important. Me and Tarek work together still, obviously, [on Flip or Flop], so it’s not like we don’t see each other. And I’m still really close with his family as well.”

The HGTV shared that she and El Moussa make a priority of “putting the kids first.” Anstead said they also refrain from making negative comments about each other to the kids. “We never say anything bad about the other parent,” she said. “For children, that’s the worst mistake a parent can make.”
