Is ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ Taking the Place of ‘High School Musical 4’?

It’s been over a month since Disney+ subscribers met characters like Nini and Ricky. What’s the future of this original series and the High School Musical franchise? Here’s what we know about High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and Disney’s scrapped High School Musical 4 movie.

‘High School Musical’ first premiered in 2006

Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat. Viewers first stepped into the halls of East High with characters like Troy and Gabriella, who stood up to their friends and broke the status quo by auditioning for their musical.

Then, fans saw what happened to these high schoolers during the summer of their junior year. A few of them got jobs, while others planned to spend a relaxing summer at their country club. With the final film in this trilogy, fans experienced everything senior year of high school brings, from dressing for prom to applying to college to walking at graduation.

High School Musical became one of Disney Channel’s most beloved original movies. Since High School Musical: Senior Year premiered, some fans are wondering what happened next for Troy, Gabriella, Ryan, Sharpay, and the rest of the alumni.

There were rumors of a fourth ‘High School Musical’ movie in the works

After years of waiting, fans were hoping to return to East High School, for a fourth High School Musical movie. At one point, the sequel was a serious possibility. However, High School Musical 4 has most likely been turned down by Disney. Or, at least, put on pause.

According to Refinery 29, “Fans didn’t hear anything about High School Musical 4 until 2016 when casting breakdowns and a general plot was released. This version of High School Musical 4 involves Erin… who falls for “bad boy” Derek but ‘isn’t sure if she should follow her heart.’ Campbell, Sharpay’s cousin, is also interested in Erin and isn’t too happy to learn she would rather date Derek. A musical throws all these players together, or would have, if the movie wasn’t scrapped.”
