The Hilarious Reason Prince Harry Was ‘So Embarrassed’ During a Dinner with the Obamas
A 2016 dinner party with President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at Kensington Palace left Prince Harry “so embarrassed” for a surprising reason. It wasn’t the high profile guests that caused the uncomfortable moment, but rather his young nephew Prince George who embarrassed him for the cutest reason.
The Obamas’ London visit included a special dinner
During a 2016 visit to London, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama were guests of Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Prince Harry for a special dinner.
Prince George made an appearance at their dinner just before his bedtime and it was so sweet. The young prince wore an adorable monogrammed robe when he greeted the Obamas, a moment that was captured in photos from the dinner.
Prince George embarrassed Prince Harry
Obama revealed the interaction between Prince Harry and young George, noting, “I have to say that the most precious thing, if you haven’t already fallen in love with him, is to see him with his nephew. Because all throughout he was like, ‘Uncle Harry, why are you so quiet?’ and I was like, ‘What? You’re not quiet.'”
“No, I wasn’t,” Harry explained. “So embarrassing. I was there, sort of, [on my] best behavior.”
Prince George was confused as Prince Harry is generally a playful uncle. Harry shared: “George literally turns around and goes ‘Mummy, Daddy, why is Prince Harry being so quiet.’”
He continued: “Well, normally I’m like throwing him around the room and stuff.”
Obama added, “And he didn’t understand what is wrong with you. He’s got a pretty good uncle over here.”
Michelle Obama gave Meghan Markle parenting advice
When Meghan Markle guest edited the September “Forces for Change” issue of Vogue, Markle interviewed Obama and received thoughtful answers from the former first lady.
She shared in the introduction of her interview: “Turns out British Vogue famously has a back page Q&A feature that is equal parts informative and whimsical, with a special guest each month. My first thought was that it needed to be someone kind, inspirational, motivating, funny, with gravitas and as much depth as levity. My second thought: it needed to be Michelle Obama.”
When asked what motherhood has taught her, Obama shared: “Being a mother has been a masterclass in letting go. Try as we might, there’s only so much we can control. And, boy, have I tried — especially at first. As mothers, we just don’t want anything or anyone to hurt our babies. But life has other plans. Bruised knees, bumpy roads and broken hearts are part of the deal.”
When Markle asked, “What is the most beautiful sound that you’ve ever heard?,” Obama noted: “We loved to listen to the little sounds they’d [Malia and Sasha] make — especially the way they cooed when they were deep into dreaming.”
She continued: “Don’t get me wrong, early parenthood is exhausting. I’m sure you know a thing or two about that these days. But there is something so magical about having a baby in the house. Time expands and contracts; each moment holds its own little eternity. I’m so excited for you and Harry to experience that, Meghan. Savour it all.”
