What do we know about ‘How I Met Your Father?’

Duff has been tapped to star in How I Met Your Father where she will play the character of Sophie. The comedy has been ordered straight-to-series on Hulu and will focus on Duff’s character telling her son the story of how she met his father.

The initial setting takes place in the current year as Sophie and her close friends are trying to figure out life. According to Variety, there’s no information on how this series would tie into the original show. However, How I Met Your Father will be written and produced by the Love, Victor co-creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, the creators of How I Met Your Mother, will serve as executive producers.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,” Duff said in a statement to the trade publication. “As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby. Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius. Just fangirling over here getting to join the Hulu Originals and 20th families. I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!”

The fourth time is the charm!

After the success of How I Met Your Mother, CBS green-lit a pilot for a spinoff by the same creators. This time, the roles would be reversed and it would be centered around a mother telling the story of how she met her kids’ father. Titled How I Met Your Dad, Greta Gerwig, Drew Tarver, Nicholas D’Agosto, and Andrew Santino were cast in the pilot. Mega Ryan was confirmed as the voice of future Sally, which in the original was Bob Saget.

Sadly, the eye network passed on the pilot as “there were elements on the pilot that didn’t work out,” CBS executive Nina Tassler said back in 2014.

It would be in 2016 when Aptaker and Berger would take a stab at creating the spinoff which they titled How I Met Your Father. However, they abandoned the idea when they were promoted to showrunners on This Is Us.

The third time someone would try to create a spinoff was in 2017. This new idea was reportedly going to be completely new and not based on the previous two concepts. However, it would ultimately not move forward past the pitch.

Carter Bays and Craig Thomas pass on the torch

Bays and Thomas might not be creating the new spinoff of How I Met Your Mother, but they will be executive producers on the Hulu spinoff. They have both given the new production their blessing and passed the torch on to the new team.

“Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story: It’s the story of how two writers got lucky enough to make their dream TV show for nine seasons and now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of How I Met Your Father,” Bays and Thomas said in a statement. “We are honored by their passion and vision, and look forward to helping them tell a legendary new story. (Thanks to all the HIMYM fans out there who waited for it.)”

Hulu has not released the timetable as to when the comedy would begin streaming.
