Hoda Kotb of the ‘Today Show’ May Have to Push Up Her Wedding Date Due To Coronavirus

Hoda Kotb of the Today Show is continuing to hold down the fort from Studio 1A at 30 Rock while most of her co-hosts report from home during the coronavirus crisis. The journalist recently celebrated her daughter Hope’s first birthday along with fiancé Joel Schiffman and 3-year-old daughter Haley Joy, and is in the midst of planning her upcoming wedding.

With the current quarantine guidelines barring large groups and events, Kotb recently commented on delaying the date for her walk down the aisle.

Hoda Kotb announced her engagement on the air

Back in November, Kotb stunned co-hosts Al Roker, Craig Melvin, Jenna Bush Hager, and Savannah Guthrie when she casually began talking about her weekend and then blurted out the happy news of her engagement. While her co-hosts were erupting in cheers and smiles, the journalist revealed that Schiffman popped the question during a romantic dinner by the beach while on a weekend getaway.

“He was like, ‘I have something else I would like to say,’” Kotb recalled, according to CNN. “He said some beautiful things and then he got down on one knee. He said ‘Would you be my wife?’ I was totally shocked. He had a good poker face.”

The Today star later shared that she and Schiffman weren’t planning on waiting too long to tie the knot. “I sort of think we probably want to do it sooner than later, because what are we waiting for?” Kotb revealed, as reported by People. “We may go back to the place we were engaged. We haven’t thought about it too much, but we might do something like that. The place is special to us.”

‘Today’ star’s change of plans

With the COVID-19 outbreak impacting all corners of the world, Kotb and Schiffman have realized they may need to rethink their timing on the wedding.

“We are literally about to push the button on the save the dates just because … we kind of have our reservations, we know what we want to do, but who’s to know if it’s going to need to be delayed?” Kotb explained to People. “So Joel and I have been discussing it.”

Known for her positive attitude, the Today anchor is able to put the delay in perspective. “It’s such small potatoes,” Kotb said. “My friend was telling me that she was at a Zoom funeral the other day, and I almost died inside. I was like, ‘Oh my God.’”

Often saying that she knows she will “be with Joel until my last breath,” Kotb isn’t too concerned with when they make their relationship legal.

“If you’re planning a celebration, and you’re wondering when it should be, just be lucky you have a celebration to plan,” the NBC journalist shared. “I’m so happy to say ‘I do’ and I’m also happy to do it whenever we need to, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s a formality now.”

Hoda Kotb and Joel Schiffman don’t delay on celebrating Hope

Though the couple may have to postpone their wedding plans, Kotb and Schiffman did not put off celebrating their daughter Hope’s first birthday. Hosting a Zoom party with relatives, the television personality included a Sesame Street theme for the occasion.

Kotb announced last April that she and her longtime beau adopted Hope, making an excited Haley a big sister. The Today star commented on the joy the addition of Hope brought to their family.

“You know what’s funny? You think that you’re full,” she said when she first adopted Hope, according to Today.com. “That’s exactly how I felt with Haley and Joel and everything. Joel and I were standing there when they hand you the baby, and it’s the closest thing to a live birth you’ll ever see, but in that moment, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, my heart just grew.’ It’s amazing.”

Whether it’s sooner or later, Kotb and Schiffman are clearly headed to the altar to solidify their lifetime commitment to each other.
