These Celebrities Refuse to Get Married
Many of us find ourselves fawning over the love lives of celebrities, choosing our favorite couples and then despairing when they inevitably break up. But with so many divorces in Hollywood, some stars choose to remain legally single their whole lives — or vow to never make the same mistake again. Here are 15 celebs who won’t be walking down the aisle anytime soon.
1. Ricky Gervais
Another Brit Ricky Gervais, has also expressed a desire to remain unmarried. The comedian is famous for bucking tradition, so it’s not shocking that he isn’t a fan of the legal institution. But he has been in a relationship with his girlfriend, Jane Fallon, for more than 30 years.
The Office star once said to David Letterman on The Late Show with David Letterman, “I don’t think there’s any point to us getting married. We don’t want any more toasters, we never want our families to meet, that’d be terrible.” They have also refrained from having children, with Gervais joking that, “Kids are spongers, they never give you anything back.”
2. Goldie Hawn
Longtime Hollywood staple Goldie Hawn has been married twice, the second time to musician Bill Hudson, the father of her famous children, Oliver and Kate Hudson. But for the last 30-some years, she’s been involved with the same man, actor Kurt Russell, and the two have no plans to make it legal.
In 2015, the Academy Award winner relayed her views on her partnership, saying, “If you have enough money, and enough sense of independence and you like your independence, there’s something psychological about not being married.”
Their family unit is as strong as ever, with Kate Hudson and Russell having worked together on the film Deepwater Horizon and the actress gushing about working alongside her “pa.”
3. Kourtney Kardashian
The big sister to Kim and Khloe Kardashian has never walked down the aisle, nor does she plan to. Kourtney Kardashian has had a tumultuous relationship with Scott Disick, but the opportunity for the pair to make it official has arisen more than once. Reality TV moments have shown Disick and Kourtney Kardashian bring up marriage more than once, often in the presence of her sisters.
The couple, who have three children together, are currently separated, and Kardashian is dating a younger man, but they appear to at least have their co-parenting under control.
4. Oprah Winfrey
Self-made mogul Oprah Winfrey is best known for her media empire, but she has also discussed her difficult upbringing. The talk show host has had a number of relationships, some of which were problematic in nature.
But in 1986, Winfrey began dating Stedman Graham, and the two have been together ever since. The pair were actually engaged once, in 1992, but never made it official. Years later, Winfrey said, “The truth of the matter is, had we gotten married we wouldn’t be together now, because in no way is this a traditional relationship.”
5. Charlize Theron
Back in 2011, Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron expressed her support for the legalization of gay marriage. But she also explained that while she strives to maintain a long-term relationship, “The actual ceremony is not something that is important to me.”
Though she was allegedly engaged to Sean Penn during their courtship, no one is certain, as she continued to tell the media that she “never had the dream of the white dress.” Recently, Theron began dating again, but has remained mum when pressed about names.
6. Chelsea Handler
Comedian Chelsea Handler has made a lot of jokes about the subject of marriage. In fact, a series of mock PSAs with the message, “Marriage. You can say no.” were released last year teasing new episodes of her weekly Netflix series, Chelsea.
So it’s safe to say that Handler is a representative for the anti-marriage crowd. But in interviews, she has expressed a more neutral stance, explaining, “I realize now that you can be committed to someone without that commercialization and all that nonsense. So now I’d get married.”
7. Eva Mendes
As an actress, Eva Mendes was in high demand, but she hasn’t been in the spotlight as much the last few years. This is likely due to her choice to start a family with her partner, Ryan Gosling.
The pair have two daughters, but have not made any moves to make their commitment official. Though rumors frequently circle the idea of their nuptials, the couple prefers to keep their relationship out of the spotlight.
8. Susan Sarandon
An interesting fact about Susan Sarandon: That’s actually not her birth name. Sarandon was her married name via her first husband, Chris Sarandon, and she kept the name professionally after their divorce.
The actress has had a few famous partners, including Tim Robbins, who she was with for over 20 years. She told People last year, “I’ve always liked the idea of choosing to be with somebody. I thought that if you didn’t get married, you wouldn’t take each other for granted as easily.”
9. Al Pacino
Acclaimed actor Al Pacino has three children from various relationships. Though he dated famous actresses like Beverly D’Angelo and Diane Keaton, he never tied the knot.
Keaton once said in regard to her former beau, “I don’t think a long-term happy marriage would be easy for him.”
10. Diane Keaton
Speaking of Keaton, the 2017 AFI Life Achievement Award honoree has also never wed. Other than Pacino, she has had high-profile relationships with Woody Allen and Warren Beatty.
Though she has two adopted children, Keaton has expressed regret in the fact that she’s never married. “It’s not the worst tragedy. But I really wish I had bought myself a man! A good man who would be a great father, I really do. I think it’s a better way to go,” she said in a People magazine interview.
11. Sarah Silverman
Another comedienne who will likely never marry is Sarah Silverman. Like Handler, Silverman has made marriage the subject of her act, though she appears to be firmer in her stance off stage.
Silverman rarely shies away from discussing her relationships, including her coupling with Jimmy Kimmel and her current pairing with Michael Sheen. But she and Sheen have no plans to tie the knot, with Silverman tweeting years ago, “Just read that I wanna get married which is hilarious b/c I will never get married. Why would I want the govt involved in my love life? Ew. It’s barbaric.”
12. Diane Kruger
Like others on this list, actress Diane Kruger was married, but has since sworn off of the act. For five years she was married to Guillaume Canet who is the current partner of actress Marion Cotillard.
After Canet, Kruger moved onto American actor Joshua Jackson, and the pair dated for 10 years. During their courtship, she told Glamour, “I learned that I don’t believe in marriage. I believe in a commitment that you make in your heart. There’s no paper that will make you stay.”
At present, Kruger is allegedly dating actor Norman Reedus.
13. Marisa Tomei
She may be a young widow in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but Marisa Tomei has never been married in real life. The Oscar-winning actress has dated actors Logan Marshall-Green and Robert Downey Jr., but did not tie the knot with either of them.
Unlike some, Tomei has stuck with her anti-marriage stance. She was famously quoted in Manhattan Magazine years ago as saying, “I’m not that big a fan of marriage as an institution, and I don’t know why women need to have children to be seen as complete human beings.”
14. Jon Hamm
As an Emmy-winning actor who manages to drift from drama to comedy seamlessly, Jon Hamm has always been a catch. And while the actor was off the market for many years, he has never been married.
Hamm and actress Jennifer Westfeldt were in a relationship for 18 years, before breaking up in 2015. Back in 2010, the Mad Men star spoke about their relationship, saying, “I don’t have the marriage chip, and neither of us have the greatest examples of marriage in our families. But Jen is the love of my life.”
