5 Hollywood Rumors: Will Brie Larson Star in ‘Captain Marvel’?
Every week, we take an in-depth look at the latest Hollywood rumors, from casting speculation to potential directorial choices to the latest TV revivals. This week brought us plenty more gossip, including Brie Larson as the latest frontrunner to star in the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, Tom Hiddleston as the newest contender to be the new James Bond, and the Marvel villain that will potentially be featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Below, check out the five biggest rumors coming out of Hollywood this week.
1. Brie Larson may be the frontrunner to play Captain Marvel
There’s been rampant speculation as to who may nab the part of Captain Marvel for years now, with everyone from Emily Blunt to Rhonda Rousey getting name dropped as contenders for the role. But it looks like Larson may be the one to get the coveted part, as Variety reports that the newly anointed Oscar-winner is Marvel’s first choice to star in the upcoming film.
Per Variety, Larson is already in “early talks” to play Captain Marvel in the highly anticipated standalone film. Though it’s unclear exactly where negotiations stand, the studio is reportedly eager to get the actress on board and it seems that Larson is currently leaning toward taking the part. Marvel has not commented on the story.
Captain Marvel doesn’t have a director yet, but will be scripted by Inside Out scribe Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman. Though the film won’t hit theaters until March 8, 2019, Marvel plans to have an actress lined up early, with the idea of introducing her in another of its upcoming films.
2. Thor: Ragnarok will feature a Planet Hulk storyline
By now, fans have already heard that Thor: Ragnarok will be a buddy movie featuring both Christ Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s The Hulk. How exactly the two Avengers will be brought together has remained unclear — until now. A new rumor from JoBlo seems to shed some light on the matter, suggesting a Planet Hulk story line will be featured in the upcoming Thor flick.
According to the report, Thor will cross paths with the big green guy on an unnamed planet, where he discovers that the latter is being forced to participate in gladiator-style games. Hulk will allegedly be donning a costume similar to the one he wears in the Planet Hulk comics. It’s there that Thor and Hulk will apparently decide to team up, with the mighty thunder god in pursuit of a weapon that will help him defend Asgard.
While the report sounds somewhere plausible, many of these rumors turn out to be false, so take this all with a grain of salt for now. Thor: Ragnarok will arrive to the big screen on November 3, 2017.
3. This may be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s primary villain
There’s been lots of talk as to who the main villain in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sequel will be. Back in January, Geek.com suggested that the movie will feature Ego, a huge living planet that began life in the Black Galaxy, where it evolved and developed organic attributes — like a brain. But now, there’s a new rumor of another potential villain floating around.
The latest speculation is that the sequel’s primary villain will be Ayesha, aka Paragon or Her. For those who don’t know her story, Ayesha is one of two genetically perfect beings who were manufactured by scientists in an effort to reboot mankind. Like her male counterpart (who is originally known as Him, but later becomes Adam Warlock), she rejects her makers and escapes to outer space. That’s where she eventually becomes known as Ayesha.
The report from JoBlo claims that the character will be played by Elizabeth Debicki, who was revealed to have joined the cast earlier this year. Details of her role have yet to be unveiled, so we’ll have to stay tuned to see whether this latest rumor is accurate. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
4. The next Bond movie may reunite The Night Manager team
When it comes to the search for the next 007, countless names have been thrown around as possible replacements for Daniel Craig, from Tom Hardy to Idris Elba. The latest rumored frontrunner? Tom Hiddleston, who recently showed off his own espionage skills in AMC’s acclaimed miniseries, The Night Manager. The actor has been linked to the role for a few months now and even addressed the speculation in March, saying that playing Bond would be an “extraordinary opportunity” and that he “would not take it lightly.”
However, the rumor has only picked up speed in recent months, with a late May report from Birth Movies Death claiming that Hiddleston is actually already “in advanced talks” to star in the 25th James Bond film.
Adding fuel to the fire? Per the Hollywood Reporter, Susanne Bier, who directed Hiddleston in The Night Manager and has previously sung the actor’s praises, is reportedly on the shortlist to take over helming duties from Sam Mendes.
After making The Night Manager a success, will the two reteam for an even more iconic spy story? Stay tuned to find out.
5. Is Star Wars: Rogue One in trouble?
The last week has not been good to Star Wars: Rogue One, with various rumors suggesting that Disney is unhappy with Gareth Edwards’s current cut of the anthology film. Speculation has it that the movie is undergoing reshoots, although it’s unclear how extensive they are. Early rumors suggested that the film was making massive changes, with Disney demanding four weeks of expensive reshoots this summer. Later reports clarified that the reshoots had been greatly exaggerated and that the changes were actually pretty standard, only meant to fine-tune some elements and lighten the tone.
Whatever the case is, it’s important to keep in mind that reshoots are a normal part of the filmmaking process, especially on big budget projects like Rogue One. In the meantime, Disney maintains that the movie will meet its release date, currently set for December 16.
