Every week, we take an in-depth look at the latest Hollywood rumors, from casting chatter to potential directorial choices to the newest TV revivals. This week brought us plenty more speculation, including news on Netflix’s Sense8, rumored plot details on Avengers: Infinity War, and the possibility of more Bourne sequels. Below, check out the five biggest rumors coming out of Hollywood this week.
1. Jason Bourne may get more sequels
If you thought this year’s Jason Bourne was the end of Matt Damon’s run as the secret agent, think again. Longtime Bourne producer Frank Marshall recently dropped some heavy hints as to the future of the franchise, suggesting there could be more sequels headed our way. As he told Yahoo! Movies UK:
Obviously [Damon and Greengrass are] very pleased with how the movie turned out. It’s really about the story, just like on this one, everyone said ‘if you come to us with a good story, we’ll think about it.’
So right now, we’re taking a pause and then we’re going to dive back in and try to find a story. We did leave it wide open at the end of the movie to continue on in Bourne’s world so we’ll see what we can come up with.
How long it will be before they find the right story remains to be seen, but it seems like a safe bet to say we’ll be seeing more of Damon’s espionage efforts in the future.
2. Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar could headline Coachella 2017
The latest music rumor to make the rounds online is sure to send Beyoncé fans into a tailspin. According to a report from Hits Daily Double, the pop singer and Kendrick Lamar will be the headliners for Coachella 2017. Considering their long line of hits and massive fanbases, the two would obviously be huge gets for the festival, guaranteeing even larger crowds and bigger ticket sales.
But fans shouldn’t get too excited just yet: The Coachella lineup is all unconfirmed at this point and won’t be officially announced until January.
4. Sense8 might be getting a Christmas special
Netflix’s highly hyped sci-fi series, created by the Wachowski siblings, earned mixed reviews in its freshman season and has remained largely off the public radar over the last year. But that may be about to change. New reports are now suggesting that the streamer will air a Sense8 Christmas special this month.
The company has yet to actually confirm the news, but online sleuths have uncovered some pretty definitive hints. Case in point: the show’s Netflix page teases a “Christmas special coming soon.” Plus, the cast has taken to social media several times over the last several months to hint at an upcoming holiday special.
Though Netflix may not have officially announced the special yet, a Christmas-themed episode would make sense. A release date for Season 2 has not yet been set, but a holiday installment could help renew interest in the show ahead of its next run of episodes. Stay tuned for more details.
4. Avengers: Infinity War may include the Infinity Gauntlet story
— Louis D’Esposito (@louisde2) November 30, 2016
Production on the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War is gearing up to begin soon, but fans are already getting an idea of what to expect. This week, Marvel Co-President Louis D’Esposito posted a photo of the cover of the Infinity Gauntlet comic series on Twitter with the caption, “I’m in the coolest #AvengersInfinityWar meeting.”
As comic fans know, Infinity Gauntlet is the precursor to Infinity War, following the villainous Thanos as he gathers all the Infinity Gems together to form the titular glove and wreak havoc in the Marvel universe. To defeat him, Adam Warlock recruits the help of the Avengers. The Infinity War story picks up later, with Warlock taking the Gauntlet and removing the good and evil inside him to become a being of pure logic. Unfortunately, the evil parts end up forming together to create the big bad, Magus.
So will we see parts of both these stories play out in Avengers: Infinity War? Considering the original source material, it makes perfect sense to use elements of Infinity Gauntlet to kick off the story in the movie. Fans will likely find out more in the coming weeks, as the project starts production. Avengers: Infinity War opens in theaters on May 4, 2018.
5. Star Wars‘ Obi-Wan may get a spinoff after Episode IX
The idea of an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff has been circulating for years. Ewan McGregor, who played a younger version of Luke Skywalker’s mentor in the Star Wars prequels, has repeatedly expressed interest in the concept, even mentioning it earlier this fall. But Lucasfilm has not commented on the notion and according to Entertainment Weekly’s Anthony Breznican, there may be a good reason why.
While appearing as a guest on the Rebel Force Radio podcast, Breznican revealed the rumored reason why Lucasfilm has not announced an Obi-Wan solo film. As he said:
I have heard rumors that the one reason they haven’t moved sooner on Obi-Wan is that they’re not done with Obi-Wan quite yet in the saga films. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Obi-Wan [solo film] happen beyond ‘Episode IX.’
Though the current Star Wars trilogy is set to end with Episode IX, Lucasfilm has made it clear that it plans on continuing to extend the franchise with more installments in the future. Whether an Obi-Wan film is one of those installments remains to be seen, but it certainly seems like a possibility. Of course, this remains speculation and should be taken as such for now. In the meantime, Episode VIII is set to premiere on December 15, 2017.
