The final season of House of Cards has been shrouded in mystery for months now, and fans are dying to know how the story will be wrapped up and how the real-life Kevin Spacey scandal will affect the series’ ending. Although that’s still an open question, we’ve finally received some information about Season 6, with details now being released about the characters played by Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear.

According to Variety, Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear will be playing Annette Shepherd and Bill Shepherd respectively. These new characters are siblings who run Shepherd Unlimited, which Netflix says is a “leading industrial conglomerate whose family foundations exert a powerful behind-the-scenes force in the American political landscape.” Netflix also teases that the Shepards have a “complicated past” with the Underwoods.

Meanwhile, Cody Fern will be playing the son of Annette Shepherd, who represents the “next generation of D.C. power players.” This phrase certainly brings the idea of a spin-off to mind; Variety reported last year that Netflix was considering House of Cards spin-offs for after Season 6 wrapped up, with one revolving around Doug Stamper and with two other ideas being discussed behind-the-scenes. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos later confirmed that a spinoff was being talked about, although Netflix has never officially announced one.

In addition to these new character bios, Netflix has also now released some images from the production of Season 6, which you can view here.

These are the first concrete details about the plot of House of Cards‘ final season we’ve received so far, although we do know that the last episodes will focus on Robin Wright’s Claire Underwood. That’s because Kevin Spacey was fired from the show following his sexual misconduct scandal last fall; production on the new season was underway when that story broke, so Netflix decided to shut down, regroup, and ultimately rewrite the last set of episodes with Spacey’s character being removed. This could not have been an easy task considering Frank Underwood is the protagonist of the series.

Nobody knows what will happen to Frank in the final season, but it’s safe to assume he will have died off-screen. It had already been established in the series that Frank’s father died of a heart attack, so perhaps Frank will suffer the same fate after the events of the Season 5 finale, in which his wife, Claire, became president and he was pushed aside.

The new season of House of Cards will only consist of eight episodes, down from the usual 13. In addition to being promoted to the lead role, Robin Wright will also be taking on responsibilities behind the camera, as she will actually direct the series finale.

There had been some speculation that the only reason the show is ending now is because of the Spacey scandal. However, that’s apparently not the case. In an interview with Today a few months ago, actress Constance Zimmer explained, “What people don’t realize is that we already knew that this season was the final season before all of this happened.”

House of Cards Season 6 will be available to stream on November 2nd.
