How a ‘Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ Puppeteer Played 2 Characters in the Same Scene
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance brings viewers back into the world of Thra which Jim Henson created in his 1982 film The Dark Crystal. Some of the characters from the movie return, like Aughra and the Skeksis Chamberlain and Ritual Master. Brand new characters like the podling Hup and gelflings Deet, Rian and Brea join the story. Puppeteer Victor Yerrid brought many of the creatures to life.
Some scenes in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance included two of Yerrid’s characters. Yerrid e played Hup, Kylin and the Ritual Master. There are different puppets for those characters, but only one Yerrid! Yerrid spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet about his work on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance premieres Friday, August 30 on Netflix.
When Kylan met Hup in ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’
They can do their best to assign puppeteers to multiple characters who have the least interaction, but it’s hard to write a story in which two characters never interact. The Jim Henson Company has ways around that problem.
“There were scenes where Kylan and Hup were in a scene together,” Yerrid said. “Then Kylan with the Ritual Master as well. That’s not an atypical thing for puppeteers. We kind of have that all the time.”
How Victor Yerrid can play two characters in the same scene in ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.’
Kylan and Hup may be in the same scene, but plenty of other puppeteers have characters who aren’t in that scene. So they can fill in for Yerrid.
“So you just have somebody double your performance,” Yerrid said. “You kind of do the closeups on either side and have your double do the wide shots. Colin Purves did a lot of the doubling on Kylan for me and he was terrific.”
Victor Yerrid got a taste of every ‘Dark Crystal’ species
Jim Henson created Gelflings, Skeksis and podlings. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance created new characters in each species, as well as some of the original ones.
“I had one of each species,” Yerrid said. “I was Hup, the podling. I got to be Kylan, the Gelfling and then Shazad Latif will be voicing that character. I also got to be the Ritual Master which will be the voice of Keegan-Michael Key. That character was originally performed by Jim Henson so you definitely feel an onus to live up to as best you can Jim’s work when you perform a character like that.”
How Victory Yerrid channeled Jim Henson in ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’
Since the Ritual Master was one of Henson’s own characters, Yerrid got to learn a lot about the creator.
“Louise Gold told me that Jim was always the hardest working on set and he gave himself the heaviest puppet, the Ritual Master,” Yerrid said. “I think in our show, the General comes pretty close but for the movie, The Ritual Master’s the heaviest. So she just said, ‘Jim always would take the hardest job and not complain about it.’ For me, being in that character, I just felt like I tried to really push my endurance and not whine too much.”
Jim’s daughter Lisa Henson shared more about The Ritual Master.
“Then Lisa told me that he was conceived, she called him like a stately sadomasochist I think was her words,” Yerrid said. “He delights in the torture of others, the rituals and that sort of thing.. I kind of used that as a basis for my performance.”
