How Camilla Parker Bowles Just Signaled She Is Ready to Be Queen
Camilla Parker Bowles showed that she is ready to be Queen at a recent diplomat reception at Buckingham Palace. Camilla rocked one of Queen Elizabeth’s priciest tiaras at the event as she mingled with guests alongside her husband, Prince Charles. Not only does the headpiece prove that Camilla is taking things up a notch, but it also shows how close she and Queen Elizabeth have grown over the years.
Camilla Parker Bowles dazzles in a gorgeous tiara
Camilla joined her husband and a slew of top royals at this year’s Christmas reception at Buckingham Palace. While Queen Elizabeth and Kate Middleton rocked their own favorite tiaras, Camilla stole the show with the Greville Tiara.
According to Express, the tiara is worth over $3 million and was donated to the royal family by Hon. Dame Margaret Helen Greville. She was a friend of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and gave it to the couple when she passed away in 1942.
When the Queen Mother died in 2002, the tiara made its way into the royal collection. But before her death, the Greville Tiara was reportedly the Queen Mother’s favorite piece – and it looks like it might be Camilla Parker Bowles’ go-to headpiece as well.
Queen Elizabeth is the one who gives permission to wear items from her collection, so it was a pretty big deal that Camilla got to rock the Greville Tiara at the event.
Is Queen Elizabeth thinking about retiring?
With Queen Elizabeth turning 94 years old next year, there is a lot of talk about her retiring by the time she hits 95. Buckingham Palace has not confirmed the rumors, but there are signs that Her Majesty is slowing down.
Over the past few years, Queen Elizabeth has been reducing the number of royal engagements she attends and giving more responsibility to Prince Charles, who is first in line to the throne. This allows Charles to gain more experience and should make for a smoother transition once Queen Elizabeth is gone.
Her husband, Prince Philip, retired when he reached 95 years old and has been enjoying retirement for the past few years. And if inside sources are correct, Queen Elizabeth has been thinking a lot about retirement lately and might step down come 2021.
“Her Majesty is mindful of her age and wants to make sure when the time comes, the transition of the Crown is seamless,” an insider shared. “I understand the queen has given the matter considerable thought and believes that, if she is still alive at 95, she will seriously consider passing the reign to Charles.”
The insider added that Her Majesty has been talking about stepping down and giving the crown to Prince Charles for quite some time. Based on their schedules, it appears as though a plan has been in place for several years.
What happens to Camilla once Charles is on the throne?
Once Charles takes the throne, Camilla Parker Bowles will be named his Queen Consort at the time of his coronation. Although she will not be referred to as the Queen of the United Kingdom, Camilla will enjoy all of the respect and responsibilities that come with the office.
Although it sounds like Queen Elizabeth is thinking about retiring, the only way Charles will become King in that scenario is if she abdicates the throne. If she does not want to abdicate, then Charles could step in as a regent.
If that happened, Charles would essentially take over all of the responsibilities of the monarchy but will not be crowned the King of the United Kingdom until Queen Elizabeth passes away or abdicates.
Camilla Parker Bowles prepares to be Queen
While Charles prepares to be the next King, Camilla is also doing her part to ensure a smooth transition.
When Charles sits on the throne, Camilla’s biggest role will be supporting him behind the scenes and during royal engagements. With that in mind, Camilla has been taking on more responsibilities so that she is better prepared for the day when Queen Elizabeth is gone.
Earlier this year, for example, Camilla attended an event at Buckingham Palace where she rubbed shoulders with NATO leaders around the world. Witnesses at the engagement say that Camilla looked very regal shaking hands with NATO members, proving once again that she is preparing herself to be Queen.
Camilla Parker Bowles’ schedule will likely get even busier in the next two years, especially if Queen Elizabeth is truly thinking about retiring by 2021.
