How Carrie Underwood Really Looks After Her Fall
Carrie Underwood has finally made dramatic a return to the spotlight. After staying in hiding for five months due to injuries to her face, the country singer left fans guessing about how different she really looks.
Now that Underwood is releasing new music, she’s ready to face the public eye once and for all. Take a look at the star’s powerful return to the 2018 Academy of Country Music Awards stage (page 5), as well as what fans really think about the way she looks since her accident (page 7).
1. Underwood suffered a nasty fall
In November 2017, Underwood shocked fans by revealing she’d endured a nasty fall outside of her Nashville home. Her accident resulted in multiple injuries, including a broken wrist and damage to her face.
She provided some details in a letter to her fan club members on Jan. 1, 2018. “There is also another part of the story that I haven’t been ready to talk about since I have still been living it and there has been much uncertainty as to how things will end up,” she wrote.
She also added, “It’s crazy how a freak random accident can change your life. In addition to breaking my wrist, I somehow managed to injure my face as well.”

2. She got between 40 and 50 stitches in her face
In the letter to her fans, Underwood revealed that the injuries on her face required dozens of stitches. “I’ll spare you the gruesome details, but when I came out of surgery the night of my fall, the doctor told [husband Mike Fisher] that he had put between 40-50 stitches in.”
She continued, “Now, here we are 7 weeks later and, even though I’ve had the best people helping me, I’m still healing and not quite looking the same.”
Next: This left fans wondering what she really looked like.
3. She’s been hiding her face from the public
Since her accident, Underwood has completely avoided the spotlight. She explained in her letter, “I am determined to make 2018 amazing and I want to share things with you along the way. And when I am ready to get in front of a camera, I want you all to understand why I might look a bit different.”
Although she has since shared photos of herself on Instagram, each post strategically hid portions of her face as to not reveal any injuries.

4. Her accident didn’t keep her out of the studio
Underwood’s accident may have kept her out of the public eye, but it didn’t keep her from making new music. She got fans excited by posting a photo of herself in the studio on Apr. 4, 2018, while still only revealing part of her face. Her photo didn’t include a caption, so the music she was working on remained a mystery.
Following a few more teaser posts, she finally revealed that she’d be releasing her first new single of 2018, “Cry Pretty,” on Apr. 11.

Next: She admitted this about her recovery.
8. She’s been feeling ‘more like herself’
In a post on her website, Underwood provided fans with an optimistic update on her health. She shared, “First off, physically, I’m doing pretty darn good these days! My wrist is almost back to normal, about 90% there … and the docs say that last 10% will come in time. And my face has been healing pretty nicely as well.”
She also noted, “I definitely feel more like myself than I have in a while.”
9. She’s returning to the stage again very soon
After her stunning performance at the ACM’s, it seems Underwood’s return to the spotlight is continuing full steam ahead. The singer has another high-profile performance coming up and is set to take the main stage at Nashville’s CMA Fest in June 2018.
Underwood will reportedly be one of the main headliners of the festival, alongside some other big stars in country music.
10. She’s promising her most creative music yet
Her personal struggles in recent months may have helped fuel her musical inspiration. Underwood recently announced her upcoming new album, Cry Pretty, promising it will be some of her most creative work yet.
“At this point in my career, I feel stronger and more creative than ever,” Underwood said in a statement. “I think you can hear that in this new album. It’s emotional, it’s soulful, it’s real, and we also have some fun on there, too. I hope everyone loves it as much as I have loved making it.”
11. This will be the first time she produced her own album
Another factor that could signify this album will be even more personal is the fact that she’s producing it herself. Underwood hinted at such, saying that the songs on Cry Pretty are “emotional, and kind of soulful and real and raw.”
“There’s so much love and care and heart that has gone into writing these songs, putting music to these songs,” she described. “And everything has been done in such a careful and loving way.”
Cry Pretty will be released on Sept. 14, 2018. This marks Underwood’s first new album since her Storyteller project was released in 2015.
