In November 2017, Underwood shocked fans by revealing she’d endured a nasty fall outside of her Nashville home. Her accident resulted in multiple injuries, including a broken wrist and damage to her face.

She provided some details in a letter to her fan club members on Jan. 1, 2018. “There is also another part of the story that I haven’t been ready to talk about since I have still been living it and there has been much uncertainty as to how things will end up,” she wrote.

She also added, “It’s crazy how a freak random accident can change your life. In addition to breaking my wrist, I somehow managed to injure my face as well.”

Her personal struggles in recent months may have helped fuel her musical inspiration. Underwood recently announced her upcoming new album, Cry Pretty, promising it will be some of her most creative work yet.

“At this point in my career, I feel stronger and more creative than ever,” Underwood said in a statement. “I think you can hear that in this new album. It’s emotional, it’s soulful, it’s real, and we also have some fun on there, too. I hope everyone loves it as much as I have loved making it.”

Another factor that could signify this album will be even more personal is the fact that she’s producing it herself. Underwood hinted at such, saying that the songs on Cry Pretty are “emotional, and kind of soulful and real and raw.”

“There’s so much love and care and heart that has gone into writing these songs, putting music to these songs,” she described. “And everything has been done in such a careful and loving way.”

Cry Pretty will be released on Sept. 14, 2018. This marks Underwood’s first new album since her Storyteller project was released in 2015.
