How Did A Starbucks Cup End Up in a ‘Game of Thrones’ Scene?

The Game of Thrones crew spent nearly two years filming, editing, and piecing together Season 8. They wanted to bring us the most dramatic, showstopping end season they could.

So why is there a Starbuck’s coffee cup sitting on the table? Season 8, episode four, “The Last of the Starks,” featured a cameo from a to-go cup sitting on a table in Winterfell. Each episode of Season 8 allegedly cost $15 million to make — that’s one expensive cup of coffee.

Sure, the great battle for Winterfell against the Night King’s vast army is over, but that cup of coffee is the wrong type of relaxation. But this isn’t the first time Game of Thrones has missed the mark.

A case of mistaken identity

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time there’s been an editing gaffe on Game of Thrones. Sure, the show has an incredibly high production value, but everyone makes mistakes from time to time, right?

The show has faced a variety of editorial errors, mostly harmless, but still amusing. In the first couple episodes of Season 1, several characters were added to the wrong house in the credits.

Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont), and Emilia Clark (Daenerys Targaryen) all had their houses jumbled up. Apparently, Dany and Jorah are Lannisters, and Sansa is a Targaryen. Who knew!

Not the first time something’s been left behind

Remember Stannis Baratheon, the surly would-be king with a claim to the Iron Throne? Well, back when he was killed off in Season 5, he made a gaffe of his own.

He forgot to stow away his laptop charger.

As you can see in this linked screenshot from a Reddit post by u/jinchuika, it would seem as if Stannis had to get a quick charge in before kicking the bucket in Season 5, episode 10. Some viewers were hoping he’d be back — as a cyborg.

To be fair, it takes a pair of eagle eyes to spot something like that. However, it’s still surprising that such a big mistake would be left behind in so important a scene.

Stannis Baratheon isn’t the only one with access to modern technology.

Back in the day when Margaery Tyrell was still kickin’ around, she had an iPhone squirrelled away somewhere. Listen, queens are popular, and they get a lot of fan mail.

In Season 3, episode 1, “Valar Dohaeris,” Margaery is seen comforting the orphans and poverty-stricken folks of Flea Bottom. She’s seen handing out toys, and being the lovable, humanitarian queen everyone adored.

In the midst of all this, if you’ve got really keen ears, you can hear a distinct email notification go off. Yes, it’s true — Margaery forgot to silence her cell phone before her charity work.

Pumpkin spice latte, to go

Maybe it’s good for the production team that this isn’t their first gaffe. Sure, there’s a coffee cup visible at 17:38 in “The Last of the Starks,” but it doesn’t seem that bad after a laptop charger.

That being said, the Game of Thrones community is taking it in stride. Already there are plenty of jokes and memes being passed around about the coffee cup.

Imagine Dany giving the barista her name:

Another Twitter user claims this is a sort of vindication for the cinematographer:

Luckily, there’s two more episodes left — more than ample time to make up for this tiny editing error. Or, if we’re lucky, to spot a few more.
