How Did Michelle Williams and Phil Elverum Meet?
Unfortunately, the couple has now called it quits. But if you’re still curious about the pair’s origins, we have the story just for you.
They are both familiar with tragedy
Williams told Vanity Fair, “I never gave up on love. I always say to Matilda, ‘Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes.'”
Elverum, a musician who performs on the indie scene as “Mount Eerie,” comes from a similarly tragic background. His wife of 13 years, graphic novelist Genevieve Castree, died in 2016 of pancreatic cancer. The couple had one daughter together, who is now three and named Agathe.
How Michelle Williams and Phil Elverum met
Williams hasn’t spoken about the relationship with Elverum much, besides her interview with Vanity Fair, where she casually broke the news that she was married. She is a notoriously private person.
But we do know that Williams and Elverum met through mutual friends. It may have been her BFF, Busy Phillips, since she posted a photo with Elverum to her Instagram back in March.
Williams and Elverum were married in a small ceremony in the Adirondacks, just only a few friends and their two daughters present. Elverum moved from Anacortes, Washington to live with Williams in Brooklyn.
About the relationship, Williams told Vanity Fair: “The way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole. I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free.”
She also called the relationship “very sacred and very special.”
How the marriage fell apart
Williams is such a private person, so we have very few details about her split from Elverum. The only information we have is what a source, supposedly close to the couple, told People, “It was an amicable split and they remain friends.”
We did have some clue that everything may not be perfect between the pair. The last few times Williams was spotted out and about, it was without her wedding ring. According to People, the pair have been apart since the beginning of the year.
Elverum is a similarly private person. He’s not on Instagram and his Twitter is dedicated 100 percent to the business and advertising of his music. According to Women’s Health, Elverum did have a Facebook, which he used as a tribute to his late wife.
Everum said about the Facebook account, “Which I only used to share photos of her with others who knew and missed her, but which she hated.”
For two people that had experienced such pain in their lives, we were all so happy to see that Williams and Elverum had found love with one another. It’s really a shame that after less than a year things didn’t work out.
Did Elverum find it difficult to deal with the fame of his new wife? Did he not like living in busy Brooklyn? Were the two simply still not over their lost loves? Especially Elverum, for who it has only been two or three years since her death.
We may not ever find out what caused the pair to split- unless one of them decides to do a tell-all interview, but somehow, that seems unlikely.
