Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick have been together for more than twenty years – an extremely impressive number in Hollywood where relationships are known to be short-lived.
So how did it all start for the long-time couple? Let’s take a walk down memory lane and see what exactly happened two decades ago when Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick first met.
They were involved in high-profile romances before meeting
Before they became acquainted with each other in the 1990’s, both Parker and Broderick had already been active in Hollywood for several years, which means that they each dated other actors for quite some time.
Sarah Jessica Parker, most notably, was with Robert Downey Jr. from 1984 until 1991. The two broke up because his drug problems were a burden on the up-and-coming actress. “There was a huge amount of time spent making sure he was okay,” Parker once told. “At a certain point, I had the courage to say, ‘I’m going to walk away, and I’m just going to pray that you don’t die.'”
After breaking up with Robert Downey Jr., she also had a fling with John F. Kennedy Jr. for about six months.
Unlike Sarah Jessica Parker who had a serious relationship in the limelight, Matthew Broderick mostly just had short-term girlfriends ever since he became famous in the 1980’s. Throughout the years, he was often seen romancing with costars like Jennifer Grey, Penelope Ann Miller, and Helen Hunt.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick met because of her brothers
In November of 1991, Broderick was tasked with directing a play for the Naked Angels Theater Company, which was founded by two of Parker’s brothers. She visited their rehearsals often and the two quickly became acquainted.
However, he did not ask her out until early 1992. Parker recalled: “He left a very charming, very self-effacing message on the machine. You know, ‘Hi, it’s Matthew Broderick.'”
One thing led to another and the pair fell in love. She even converted him into becoming a Yankees fan despite the fact that he grew up supporting the Mets.
They got married a few years later and had children
On May 19, 1997, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick tied the knot at a synagogue in New York City. Parker famously wore black instead of the more traditional white.
“I never thought about a wedding dress. Never. Had not one daydream about it,” she once said. However, she reportedly told Harper’s Bazaar in 2009 that if they ever renewed their vow, she would wear a white dress this time.
Parker and Broderick had their first child together in 2002 – a son named James. Seven years later, in 2009, they welcomed twin daughters Tabitha and Marion.
The couple has admitted that they are very hands-on with their children. Parker once shared that they had a nanny to help with the young twins and another person to oversee their son’s schedule, but nothing more.
“That’s something that’s important to both of us,” she said of their desire to be involved in their kids’ lives, “and we don’t shirk it because what’s the point in having a family if you’re not going to really participate in it, you know?”
When it comes to Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s marriage and how they have managed to stay together for such a long time in an industry where divorces are rampant, both of them have shared that they are friends first and foremost.
“I know it sounds dreary and not sexy, but I think the most important part of it is companionship,” Parker said. “For me, it’s about asking myself: who do I want to sit with, in Ireland [where we have a second home]? Who do I want to see those ruins with? Who is still the most challenging to me? Who do I like best?”
