Early Career

St. John was somewhat of an acting veteran. He first appeared on television when he was just 8 years old on the television show that’s My Mama.

He went on to land a role in the 1979 ABC miniseries Roots: The Next Generations. While on the show, he played the role of Alex Haley. He did such an outstanding job in the role that he was given a Youth in Film award. After that, he continued acting and landed roles on notable shows such as Happy Days and The Cosby Show.

Early in his career, St. John began acting alongside big names in the industry. These stars included Richard Pryor, Tony Orlando, Diahann Carroll, Jack Warden, James Earl Jones, Flip Wilson, Smokey Robinson, Irene Cara, Gladys Knight, Farrah Fawcett, and Jon Voight to name a few.

His biggest credit is his 23-year stint on The Young and the Restless.

Awards and Nominations

Since breaking into the industry, St. John has been nominated for 8 Emmy Awards.

The strange thing about his nominations is that two of them came from a very short stint on a show called Generations, which only ran from 1989-1991.

He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in both 1990 and 1991. In 1992, he won an Emmy for his work as Neil Winters on The Young and The Restless.

After winning those two Emmys, he was nominated again in 1993, 1999, 2000, 2006, and 2007. He went on to win an Emmy in 2008 for Best Supporting Actor on The Young and the Restless.

In addition to his Emmys, St. John also won an NAACP Image Award for Best Actor in The Young and the Restless. He has been nominated for an Image award sixteen times.

He was also voted as one of the most fascinating faces by PEOPLE in 1998. In 1999, he was voted one of the Top Ten Soap Studs of all time by E! Online, according to his IMDB.

St. John was found dead on Sunday, Feb. 3.

According to TMZ, his body was found when a friend went to his home to check in on him. The friend then called the police and parametics to the house but the actor was pronounced dead on the scene.

A cause of death has not been released, but sources have revealed that alcohol could have been involved.
