How Does Mandy Moore Know Meghan Markle? Their Past Friendship Explained

Mandy Moore has had a long, illustrious career in Hollywood, the stunning celebrity began her career in the late ’90s as a pop star and has transformed into an acclaimed actress who knows just how to pluck at our heartstrings on NBC’s family drama This is Us. Duchess Meghan Markle also hails from the same industry. In fact, the Duchess of Sussex recently left behind her life in Hollywood and a beloved role on USA’s Suits to live in the U.K., marry Prince Harry, and become a part of the British Royal Family.

And yet, despite their similar backgrounds and careers, we had no idea that Moore and Markle were once thick as thieves. Though they’ve lost touch over the years, the ladies were once very good friends.

Connecting over a romantic comedy

Back in 2006, Moore was getting back into acting after a short hiatus, and she starred in the rom-com, License to Wed with the late Robin Williams and John Krasinski. One of the producers of the film just happened to be Markle’s ex-husband, Trevor Engelson. Markle had not yet been cast in Suits, but she was working her way up in Hollywood taking smaller roles on various TV shows and in films.

As a result, the Duchess of Sussex had a bit of time on her hands. Moore told NBC Access, “[Meghan’s] ex-husband was a producer on a movie that I worked on, so I met her back in 2006 and spent a lot of time with them, a lot of time with her, and she is a lovely, generous woman.” The women really began to bond after a brunch in Jamaica and a subsequent summer spent together in the Hamptons as the film was being finished.

A lifetime ago

Moore, who just tied the knot herself– marrying musician Taylor Goldsmith remembers those lovely summer days with Markle fondly. She explained, “It was another lifetime ago for both of us.” Since then, both of the women’s lives have gone in massively different but very big directions. Since both Moore and Markle seem super lovely and down to earth, we can certainly see why they were able to build a friendship.

License to Wed debuted over a decade ago, and both Moore and Markle have been divorced, found love again, and made massive strides in their careers. The A Walk to Remember actress revealed that when the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry announced their engagement, she reached out to her old friend through email.

Markle, of course, eagerly responded. The Princess Diaries actress revealed, “[She] was very kind and said that she really likes This Is Us. She watches the show, so that was pretty cool. She’s just a normal, regular girl.” We’re super obsessed with this low-key friendship. If Markle were still acting we’d be thrilled to see her guest star on This is Us. We know that’s not possible, but we really do hope these ladies cross paths again in the future.
