How Does Maren Morris Feel About Getting Rejected From ‘The Voice’ and ‘American Idol’?
Maren Morris is one of the biggest names in music right now. She is a rising success in country music and has also seen success in the pop world thanks to her collaboration with Zedd and Grey with the hit song “The Middle.”
Now Morris reveals that the road to success came with a few challenges along the way. For example, she was rejected by American Idol and The Voice, plus one other talent show.
Morris was rejected by ‘American Idol’ and ‘The Voice’
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live After Show, Morris was asked by a fan “How crazy was it that you were rejected by both American Idol and The Voice, but both shows had contestants covering your songs?” Host Andy Cohen was shocked by the revelation and asked the singer if it was true. Morris confirmed that not only was she rejected by American Idol and The Voice, America’s Got Talent rejected her as well.
Morris said that there were a ton of shows that rejected her, to which she said, “Thank God.” Instead of performing on either of those shows and being at the will of their record labels, Morris found success with hit songs like “The Middle” and “My Church.”
Contestants from both shows sang a Maren Morris song
In what Morris calls a “full circle moment” contestants from both The Voice and American Idol performed Morris’ song “My Church” on the very shows that rejected her. During season 15 of American Idol, contestant Jenna Renae performed Morris song for judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick Jr. Later that year, Marah Sarah performed the same song on The Voice.
Rolling Stone points out that both versions were a little lacking compared to the original. The magazine notes, “Both performances while vocally accurate, had a stiff formality and vocal forcefulness that’s nowhere to be found on Morris’ breezy original.”
The singer is breaking records
Morris recently released her second album, GIRL, and it’s already breaking records. The album was released on March 8 and broke the record for the biggest streaming week for an album by a woman in country music. The album was streamed over 24 million times in its first week.
Morris was surprised by the response to the album. She said, “I am blown away by the support this week. My fans were already screaming the lyrics at the show the day after the album came out. I am so shocked and thankful to have broken this record for country music!”
Did Maren Morris dodge a bullet by being rejected?
It would have been easy for Morris to feel defeated after being rejected by so many big name talent shows. But instead of hanging her head and walking away from music, the singer fought even harder.
Eventually, Morris landed a record deal with Columbia Nashville and found breakout success. The country artist won a CMA award for Best New Artist in 2016 and won a Grammy award for Best Solo Country Performance for her song “My Church.”
Being rejected by these talents shows may have actually have been the best thing to happen to Morris. The Voice is famous for being unable to produce a successful artist. In its 16 seasons, none of the contestants have seen notable commercial success. As for American Idol and America’s Got Talent, though some big names came out of the shows in their early years, they too have struggled to produce a star as of late.
Had Morris competed on one of these shows or even won, there is a good chance that she would have ended up forgotten like the rest of the contestants. Now, as Morris points out, she can sit back and watch others use her show to audition for these shows while she gets to “collect a check and get some sweet revenge.”
