How Fans Feel About Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Leading the MCU
With Sony and Disney far from a re-negotiation that will return Parker to his rightful home, those hoping that Spidey would somehow swing in (pun intended) for the leadership role — following the events of Avengers: Endgame — must now face the music. Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel has been set to take the reigns as the Avengers’ pivotal hero moving forward.
Way back, Kevin Feige discussed Captain Marve’s role to the MCU and explained that her presence would expand, growing to influence the entire saga in Phase 4, and beyond. He stated:
When we found out that Brie Larson might be interested in joining our world, we had a number of meetings. She was a huge fan of the character in the comics. One of the highlights of my career at Marvel was introducing her at Comic-Con and having her come out on stage and stand there with literally almost everybody else from our movies. There she was at the forefront, and it was a great foreshadowing – not just for how audiences are going to embrace Brie as this character, but also for how Captain Marvel is about to take the lead and be at the forefront of the entire Cinematic Universe.Kevin Feige via Heroic Hollywood
Kevin Feige explained that Captain Marvel would be “at the forefront” of the MCU, which, following Iron Man’s death and Captain America’s relinquishing of the shield, seems to be on the horizon. With Captain Marvel set to become the new leader, the new face of the entire cinematic universe, how do fans feel?
Captain Marvel has her skeptics and her supporters; who makes up the majority?
Captain Marvel has faced a great degree of backlash from certain MCU enthusiasts who argue her character was given too much power, or too much presence in the final installment, despite the fact that she is a new heroine, whose value should not outweigh the original saviors.
Others argue that Brie Larson, as a social justice warrior, actively pushes a representation agenda across film and criticism that takes away from the movie and undermines the character. However, many feel that Brie Larson, as Marvel’s strongest female savior, is doing exactly what she should be: putting her platform to good use.
While skeptics may speak the loudest, they likely do not make up the majority. Most fans and critics alike see her as the logical next step for the MCU. Taking the movie’s box office success, as well as its critical and fan reception into account, Captain Marvel is more beloved than despised. Not to mention, when speaking on this topic, across various forums, most fans chimed in to communicate their support, arguing that this is the most logical next step. Fans stated:
This wouldn’t shock me. The torch is being passed from Cap and Tony. It won’t be passed to someone like Nat or Scott. It will be a big character and Captain Marvel is big. Not to mention, Brie Larson is insanely talented.Reddit User
I think what people are scared of is a blatant “You’re the leader now, Carol” in the movie. I doubt this will happen. Her leadership will be a build-up, and if the next few years of a narrative is as good as the last 10 years of narrative, it should work out really well.Reddit User
Captain Marvel is a natural leader, which Spidey isn’t and has led the Avengers several times in the comics. She has the experience and the knowledge the other two don’t. Her being the leader with Tchalla next to her would make more sense. They’d be the new Tony-Steve.Reddit User
Fans also explain that people who do not see Captain Marvel as the new leader are placing their judgment above Kevin Feige’s — the man who has managed to guarantee audience satisfaction for the last decade.
While many fans express concerns that Captain Marvel will have big shoes to fill, most argue that, if done correctly, she will be a great new leader. Her sheer talent is undeniable; the Oscar winner for Room merely needs a script catered to her impressive abilities.
