Lil Nas X recently came out as gay on social media

After enjoying a few weeks in the number one spot on Billboard’s “Hot 100” music chart, Lil Nas X shared that he identifies as gay. This announcement came at the end of pride month, and some had mixed reactions about the news. Fans were mostly supportive, but, of course, there were people upset that he is a part of the LGBTQ community.

“How big of a deal is that?” Lil Nas X said in an interview with BBC. “Is it something that I was considering never doing ever, like taking to the grave or something? But I was like, I don’ t want to live my entire life – especially how I got to where I’m at, not doing what I want to do.”

Especially with the success of “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X solidified his place as one of the most influential artists of 2019. Now identifying as a black queer artist, Lil Nas X made his mark in the music industry, particularly in the country music industry.

“Old Town Road” is so successful, in fact, that it broke the record for most consecutive weeks in the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100. Previous songs to hold that record include “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men and “Despacito” by Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber.

In addition to gaining support from fans worldwide, Lil Nas X racked up multiple nominations at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. That includes the awards or Video of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. As a black, gay, country/rap artist, Lil Nas X paved the way for other musicians breaking into the same style of music. That includes Blanco Brown with his country-trap song, entitled “The Git Up.”

The artist recorded multiple ‘Old Town Road’ remixes, some featuring artists like RM of BTS

There’s one way to capitalize on a song’s success — record a bunch of remixes. That’s exactly what Lil Nas X did. The artist released multiple remixes featuring artists like Mason Ramsey, Diplo, and even RM of the K-Pop group, BTS.

The remix with the most attention features country artist Billy Ray Cyrus. Lil Nas X later went on to sing it with Miley Cyrus and party with Noah Cyrus. After dozens of remixes and covers, Lil Nas X reportedly turned down a few remixes. That includes one with Mayor and Presidential Candidate, Pete Buttigieg. When Lil Nas X came out, Mayor Buttigieg was quick to welcome him.

“Lil Nas X has gone from viral sensation to groundbreaking musician. As a fan, I’m thrilled and inspired to see him standing in his truth as a member of the LGBTQ community,” Buttigieg tweeted. “Welcome to the family!”

MTV’s Video Music Awards take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on August 26, 2019, 9 pm EDT.
