How Long Have Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi Been Married? Their Relationship Timeline

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are known as one of Hollywood’s power couples. The Arrested Development actress and the daytime talk show host have known each other for almost two decades. Their relationship seems to only get stronger as the years go by.

Although there are many heartwarming stories about Ellen DeGeneres, our favorite one is the love story between her and Portia. We have put together a timeline of their relationship so that you can see for yourself just how endearing these two really are together.

How Long Have They Been Married?

Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres got married on August 16, 2008. Being that they both have a birthday in late January, the couple was originally planning on having a private ceremony during a joint birthday celebration. But, those plans quickly changed when a California Supreme Court overturned a ban on gay marriages. The next day, Ellen announced to a delighted audience, that she would now be getting married soon.

Being able to finally get married was such a joyous occasion for both Portia and Ellen. However, they did have to overcome some minor bumps in the road before they could live happily ever after.

Love at First Sight

Portia and Ellen first met at a social event in 2000. At that time, Portia was starring on the hit TV show, Ally McBeal. In November of 2009, the couple had gone on the Oprah Winfrey show to have their first interview as a married couple. During that interview, Portia admitted to falling in love with Ellen from the moment she had laid eyes on her. However, at that time, Portia had not outed herself as a gay person. Portia explained her reasoning for not telling Ellen how she felt at the time by saying “I was afraid that if I had talked about being gay, then that would be the end of my career; so I wasn’t about to then date the most famous lesbian in the world.”

Even though Portia had instantly become smitten with Ellen, it was years before the Emmy-winning talk show host had any idea about Portia’s true feelings. They had both said that after their initial meeting, they had seen each other every now and then at different events for the next three years. When Oprah asked Ellen if she was shooting Cupid’s arrows at Portia during those three years, Ellen responded by saying “No, I had completely given up. We had met a while back, and I felt like we had a connection, then, um, I didn’t feel anything back, and I was just like ‘Well, okay, I just have feelings for her.'”

Portia Finally Found the Courage

Even after their occasional sightings of each other over a three-year period, it wasn’t until Portia saw Ellen again at a photo shoot that she became weak in the knees and realized that she was completely overwhelmed by her feelings for Ellen. However, it took about ten months after the photo shoot before Portia finally got the courage to tell Ellen how she felt.

She was Well Worth the Wait

After Portia and Ellen had been dating for about two years, Portia did an interview with The Advocate where she gushed about her relationship with Ellen. She described their relationship as respectful, loving, and peaceful. She even went on to tell the interviewer “We have a lot in common; we share the same outlook on life. I really feel not alone for the first time in my life.”

Living the Good Life

Even after ten years, these two still have a kind of love the most people dream about. They both seem to have genuine respect for each other, which creates a great friendship and one-of-a-kind partnership between the two. They seem to live solely for the other person’s happiness. This seemed especially true when Portia gave Ellen “the best gift ever,” and created a gorilla sanctuary in Ellen’s name for her 60th birthday.

From the start, their entire relationship seemed like a Hollywood fairytale. We are not sure what the future holds for these two individuals, but we do know that it seems like that will not let anything stand in their way of living happily ever after.
