How Long Were Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland Married?
By now, we’ve come to expect that Meghan Markle’s father is going to do interviews and continue selling his daughter and the royal family out for no reason. Recently though he decided to bring the duchess’ mother, who is his ex-wife, Doria Ragland, into it.
In his interview with the Daily Mail published in late July 2018, Thomas Markle Sr. took a couple shots at the woman he used to be married to and maintained that his daughter didn’t get her “unkind attitude” from him.
“Meghan got her attitude from her mother,” he said. “Doria always told Meghan: ‘If they’re not doing anything for you, why should you do anything for them?’ I like to think that a little kindness goes a long way. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt.”
Ragland has taken the same stance as her daughter for now and has not responded to Markle’s Sr.’s comments.
Meghan spoke candidly in the past about both her parents, how they met, and her upbringing.
In a 2015 essay with Elle Magazine, Markle said, “It was the late ’70s when my parents met, my dad was a lighting director for a soap opera and my mom was a temp at the studio. I like to think he was drawn to her sweet eyes and her Afro, plus their shared love of antiques.”
The pair wed in 1979. “Growing up in a homogeneous community in Pennsylvania, the concept of marrying an African-American woman was not on the cards for my dad.,” Meghan explained. “But he saw beyond what was put in front of him in that small-sized town.”
Ragland and Markle Sr. had their daughter in 1981 but they ended up divorcing when she was six years old after about eight years of marriage. Meghan had said that she remained close with her father over the years and even visited the set of Married… with Children where he worked regularly.
After all the interviews and criticizing he has done in the media about the royals though, repairing their relationship now will be difficult. And, when it comes to his ex-wife, he seems to be jealous of how tight Meghan still is with her mother.
“Oh, she’s a mommy’s girl now and Doria gets a lot of the credit,” Markle Sr. told the Daily Mail. “But Meghan seems to have forgotten that she lived with me up until Doria and I divorced … I was the one who picked her up because I didn’t have to be at the studios until late and would then work until midnight. When Meghan was 11, she moved back in with me up until she was 17 and went to college. I was having my good years then, making good money, and could afford to give her the best, with a good school, good education, good home. She became the woman that she is today thanks to everything I did for her. And did I get any recognition for it? Any thanks? She doesn’t even speak to me now. How cold is that?”
In that same interview, Markle Sr. also brought up Prince Harry’s mom, Princess Diana, saying that he feels she would be very upset by the way the royals have been treating him. “[She] would have loathed. That’s not what Diana stood for.”
Markle Sr. apparently understood that his son-in-law likely wouldn’t be happy hearing any remarks about his late mother and said he doesn’t care if Harry ever speaks to him again. He just wants his daughter to contact him.
