How Many Hulu Series Are Nominated At the 2019 Emmys?

Every year, the best series compete at the Emmy Awards. And there has never been more incredible content available, especially with the popularity of streaming services. Here’s how one of those sites, Hulu, has done over the years, and how many awards it could take home this season.

Netflix kicked off streaming services at the Emmys

The first streaming service to acquire Emmy nominations was Netflix. Back in 2013, House of Cards helped Netflix bring in quite a few nods and even a couple of awards, making it the inaugural streaming service at the prestigious awards show.

That makes this kind of a landmark year. That’s because the 2019 Emmys are the last time that House of Cards is eligible for the major award, as there will be no more seasons of the series. But Netflix isn’t worried — they still have plenty of contenders in the race.

What was Hulu’s first Emmy-nominated show?

Let’s get back to Hulu. It wasn’t until just two years ago that Hulu entered the conversation as a major Emmy contender (technically, it first received a nomination for costumes at the Creative Arts Emmys for The Mindy Project years prior, but that wasn’t much of a conversation).

It was The Handmaid’s Tale, the dystopian drama based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, that got people talking about Hulu as an outlet for prestigious content. And it started off with a bang: When the series won Outstanding Drama Series in 2017, it was the first streaming service to win in such a big category.

Did Hulu win any Creative Arts Emmys in 2019?

Since then, The Handmaid’s Tale has continued to do very well at the Emmys, with a total of 44 nominations over three award seasons, and 14 wins so far, counting its Creative Arts wins from this year. Out of nine Creative Arts Emmy nominations in 2019, The Handmaid’s Tale earned three awards.

Hulu only had one other entry at the Creative Arts Emmys this year. The documentary, Minding the Gap, was nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Special. It lost to HBO’s Leaving Neverland.

Here’s how many Emmys Hulu is up for this year

This year, Hulu has a total of 20 nominations, down from last year’s 27. The Handmaid’s Tale, naturally, leads with 11. Additionally, the stars of The Act, a limited series, are nominated for their roles. Joey King is up for Lead Actress In A Limited Series Or TV Movie, and her co-star Patricia Arquette is nominated for Supporting Actress In A Limited Series Or TV Movie.

The Handmaid’s Tale, naturally, took the bulk of the nominations. But also up for an award is the series I Love You, America, starring Sarah Silverman. The canceled program is up for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for the second year in a row.

Predictions for how Hulu will do at the 2019 Primetime Emmys

With its remaining nominations, how will Hulu do at the Primetime Emmy Awards? It’s hard to say, but it’s up against some fierce competition, including Game of Thrones, Succession, and Killing Eve. We predict that Hulu has taken home most if not all of its awards this season, but we’ll have to wait and find out on Sunday.
