Mariska Hargitay is one of America’s favorite TV detectives. She has starred on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Olivia Benson since the show’s inception in 1999. Her husband, Peter Hermann, who now plays Charles Brooks on Younger, also had a recurring role on the crime drama as defense attorney Trevor Langan.
Over the years, this celebrity pair has given us glimpses into their lives together via social media and fans can’t get enough of their adorable love story and picture-perfect family.
Here’s more on the couple including how they met, their net worth, how many children they have, and what their secret is to a happy marriage.
How long they’ve been married
Hargitay and Hermann actually met on the set of Law & Order: SVU back in 2001. The actress recalled that she tried telling him a joke to break the ice but he didn’t find it funny. A few months later though when they two were having a conversation about religion, he asked if she would like to go to church with him. Hargitay said she knew then that he was the one. In 2004, they tied the knot at the Unitarian Historical Chapel in Santa Barbara, California.
So what’s their secret to a happy marriage?
“There is no secret,” Hermann told Entertainment Tonight. “We’re all just working through it–whether it’s a relationship that exists in the public eye to some degree or [not] … That doesn’t mean that they’re easy, but they’re not that complicated. It’s fundamentals–kindness, listen well, fight fair.”
How many children they have
Hargitay and Hermann have three children together.
They welcomed their first child, August Miklós Friedrich, in 2006 when Hargitay was 42. Then five years later, the couple adopted a baby girl, Amaya Josephine, and a boy named Andrew Nicolas.
The SVU actress has spoken in the past about their choice to adopt after the birth of their biological son.
“August wanted siblings, and Peter and I both envisioned this big family because we both come from that,” she told Good Housekeeping. “Plus, we just had so much love to give. I was really letting the chips fall as they might because I do think so much is up to God. I always said, ‘I don’t know how this is going to end up. I don’t know if I’m going to get pregnant and have twins. I don’t know … if somebody’s going to leave a baby on my doorstep.’ But I really did think that down the line, Peter and I would adopt … That was always part of the plan.”
What is the couple’s net worth?
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Hargitay makes a whopping $450,000 an episode and has an estimated net worth of $50 million.
The website also notes that Hermann has a net worth of $10 million, bringing their combined net worth to $60 million.
