How Many Marvel Movies Have Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. Made Together?
Everyone rants and raves about Hollywood couples formed on set. But, what about friendships? Surely working alongside peers on painstaking movies and long-standing series is bound to lead to die-hard friendships, confused frenemies, and pairs that can’t stand each other on and off the set.
Considering the MCU is the newest project that’s bringing actors and actress together like no other, it’s got fans wondering — who sticks by each other’s side once the superhero costumes come off? Look no further than the friendship between Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.
How many MCU movies featured both Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.?
RDJ made a pretty penny during his run with Marvel. He starred in the film that kicked the project off, Iron Man, as well as the latest addition to the MCU, Avengers: End Game. In total, the real-life Tony Stark has been cast in 10 Marvel films since 2008. The first, of course, was Iron Man, followed by an uncredited appearance in The Incredible Hulk.
From there RDJ became a major playing in the MCU appearing in Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame.
Despite being a pro at Marvel movies thanks to his appearance in the Fantastic Four, Evans was intimidated to join the massive Marvel project as such a beloved superhero. While he may not have had faith in himself, RDJ had plenty to spare. The A-lister convinced the Cellular actor that he was perfect for the role and the rest is history.
Evans went on to star in Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World (uncredited), Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man (uncredited), Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel (uncredited), and of course Avengers: Endgame.
After tallying it up, Evans surprisingly appeared in more films that RDJ, well just one more to be fair. He also has more uncredited roles while Downey Jr.’s appearances are more central to the movies he starred in. The two shared the stage for six MCU films across seven years, more than enough time to form a life-long friendship.
What is Captain America and Iron Man’s relationship like?
Captain America and Iron Man have had a rocky relationship during their shared time on screen, but things weren’t always this way. Prior to the release of the movies, the two superheroes shared a pretty complicated but deep friendship in the comics. One that wasn’t written into the films in a way that hardcore comics fans hoped.
In the movies the two are frenemies, but ones that lack the depth created in the source material. When the superhero duo first meets in The Avengers, it’s clear their different ideologies is going to be a point of tension. Stark sees Rogers as uptight while Rogers sees Stark as reckless. After Coulson’s passing, they were able to reconcile, but they still weren’t buddy-buddy.
In Captain America: Civil War the two fought on opposite sides of the spectrum. The terms of the Sokovia Accords threw a wrench into what was already a tenuous friendship pretty much undoing the reconciliation achieved in the previous film.
Sadly the duo didn’t have shared screen time in Avengers: Infinity War to try to make up either. They both had their own missions to tackle and there was no time to make amends. That means Endgame is where the final decision on their friendship is made.
Are Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. pals in real life?
Their bromance began over a decade ago when RDJ reached out to Evans to have him join him in the MCU. At the time it could have easily just been respect for him as an actor, but it’s blossomed into so much more over the years.
The dynamic duo loves to share their weird friendship with the world through unusually appropriate memes. One of the earliest social media posts featured the actors alongside Bambi and Faline. The tweet reads, “All the way down to the eye color.” Obviously, RDJ felt they were a match made in friendship heaven!
Next up was a comparison to what is one of the most iconic Disney friendships, Buzz Lightyear and Woody from Toy Story. The collage RDJ put together was scarily perfect! The caption read, “You’ve got a friend in…oh, waist #civil war.” A great callback to the film as the pair was at odds during Civil War, while their friendship continued to go nothing but up!
Probably the funniest of the bunch was the Snow White and the Prince tweet put out earlier this year. RDJ has zero problems letting the world know that Evans is his knight in shining armor! Their friendship doesn’t start and end with silly memes though!
Downey Jr. took things to the next level when he bought his brother-in-arms a custom Avengers car. Despite the grandiose act, it’s the wonderful words shared between the actors that solidify their friendship. When Evans wrote his farewell Tweet to his Avengers gang on Twitter, RDJ hopped on with the perfect response. The fans also joined in to show they too will miss “STONY.”
What a beautiful way to say goodbye to the franchise that formed an unusual Hollywood friendship.
