Meghan Markle wore Princess Diana’s Cartier watch in the ‘Time100’ photo
In the official black and white image of Harry and Meghan for their Time100 appearance, the duchess paid a subtle tribute to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. According to Yahoo!, Meghan wore Diana’s Cartier Tank Francaise gold watch.
The accessory is reportedly worth $23,000. Cameras captured Diana wearing it just months before her death in August 1997.
As Cheat Sheet has previously reported, Prince Harry and Prince William each chose a special piece of their mother’s jewelry to keep after her death in 1997. Harry chose his mother’s engagement ring, and William chose the Cartier watch.
However, when William got engaged to Kate Middleton in 2010, Harry handed over Diana’s engagement ring. He thought it would be fitting for William to propose with the 12-carat oval blue sapphire.
In return, William gave Harry their mother’s gold Cartier watch so they would each still have a special piece of Diana’s jewelry. Harry eventually gifted the watch to Meghan. But ironically, she already had one of her own.
The former ‘Suits’ star already owned her own Cartier watch
The Duchess of Sussex starred on Suits for seven seasons before she got engaged to Prince Harry. According to Her, Meghan decided to splurge when the USA network renewed the legal drama for a third season in 2013.
Meghan bought herself the two-tone version of the Cartier Tank Francaise watch. At the time, she said she’d always coveted the watch. After the USA network picked the show up for another season, Meghan said it felt like “such a milestone.”
“I had it engraved on the back, ‘To M.M. From M.M.’ and I plan to give it to my daughter one day,” Meghan said. “That’s what makes pieces special, the connection you have to them.”
Meghan’s version is stainless steel and yellow gold and contains a sapphire. It retails for approximately $6,500.
The Duchess of Sussex also inherited a ring, a pair of earrings, and a bracelet that all belonged to the Princess of Wales. When Prince Harry designed Meghan’s engagement ring in 2018, he also included two stones from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection.
