Michelle Pfeiffer is one of Hollywood’s most renowned actresses, having starred in numerous hit films such as Grease 2 (1982), Scarface (1983), Tequila Sunrise (1988), Batman Returns (1992), What Lies Beneath (2000), and Hairspray (2007).
While Pfeiffer’s career has been full of exciting and varied roles, her personal life also has some interesting twists and turns as well. In fact, Pfeiffer’s love life is a bit different than usual and that may be due to the fact that her sister almost ‘stole’ her future husband from her.
Michelle Pfeiffer originally wanted to set her sister up with her future husband
Pfeiffer is currently married to David E. Kelley, who has written for shows such as Chicago Hope, Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, and Big Little Lies. The two of them met in the early 1990s, though at the time Pfeiffer was not completely awestruck by Kelley.
Pfeiffer shared with Candis Magazine that they first met on a blind date with a group of people. She did not talk much to Kelley because he seemed to be getting along well with one of her sisters.
“He talked to my sister and I talked to his friend, and he and my sister seemed to be hitting it off,” Pfeiffer said, “so I thought maybe we should set them up instead, but the friend who was setting us up said, ‘Don’t you dare.'”
Pfeiffer and Kelley decided to go on a one-on-one date instead and found that sparks flew between them.
Michelle Pfeiffer and her husband have been married for 26 years
Nine months after they started dating, Pfeiffer and Kelley tied the knot in November of 1993. They are still going strong today, which is something that is rare to see in Hollywood.
In fact, Pfeiffer was married once before Kelley. In 1981, she married fellow actor Peter Horton, though the couple parted ways less than 10 years later.
Pfeiffer seemed to have learned quite a lot from her past marriage and was able to make things work the second time around. She told Parade Magazine that she “chose really well” when she married Kelley.
“I’ve never met a person who has more integrity than my husband,” she said. “I respect that. There’s his humor and intelligence, too, and he’s really cute, all those things—but if you don’t respect your partner, you’ll get sick of him.”
Michelle Pfeiffer and her husband have two children together
Pfeiffer and Kelley have two children together: Claudia (b. 1993) and John (b. 1994).
Claudia was actually adopted as a newborn by Pfeiffer just two months into her relationship with Kelley. Pfeiffer once shared that having Claudia around when she was still dating Kelley allowed her to see what kind of father he would be. The fact that he was there for her throughout the process of becoming a new mother also helped them grow.
“We both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together, and in a strange way, it took the pressure off us, as a couple,” Pfeiffer said.
When Claudia and John were kids, Pfeiffer stopped acting as frequently since she wanted her career to not interfere with motherhood. However, her children are all grown up now, and Pfeiffer is essentially an empty-nester, which is why she started taking on more work in the past few years.
She was recently in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019).
Pfeiffer is currently filming French Exit, a film based on the novel by Patrick deWitt. The movie is in production so there has been no word yet on when it will be released.
