How Much Was Anthony Bourdain Worth At the Time of His Death?
Months after Anthony Bourdain’s shocking death, his name was brought back in the news by the woman he was in a relationship with when he died who claimed that he made a large payment on her behalf.
In August 2018, a report ran in the New York Times that Bourdain’s girlfriend, a leading figure of the #MeToo Movement, Asia Argento, had arranged a financial settlement of $380,000 to her own accuser. The Italian actress said that her late boyfriend agreed to the payment in April 2018.
Here’s more on that and how much the celebrity chef was really worth at the time of his death.
Argento’s accuser is an actor and musician named Jimmy Bennett. He alleges that she gave him alcohol and initiated sex with him inside a Marina del Rey, California, hotel room in 2013 when he was just 17 years old. Days after the bombshell report was published, Argento denied the allegations and revealed what role Bourdain played in it.
“I strongly deny and oppose the contents of the New York Times article,” she stated. “I am deeply shocked and hurt by having read news that is absolutely false. I have never had any sexual relationship with Bennett.”
Argento went on to say that she only had a friendship with Bennett but that ended and when he was having financial difficulties “unexpectedly made an exorbitant request of money.” She added that Bennett knew that her boyfriend “was a man of great perceived wealth” and figured the Parts Unknown star would not want any “negative publicity.” Bourdain agreed to pay the young actor on “the condition that we would no longer suffer any further intrusions in our life.”
Despite conflicting reports, Bourdain was a very wealthy man. He was not only a chef but also a popular TV personality and author of several books including Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly and No Reservations: Around the World on an Empty Stomach to name a few. At the time of his death, he had a net worth of $16 million.
You may have read that he was only worth $1.2 million when he died, however, that estimate only included assets he had in the bank. It did not take into account any real estate or assets held in trust. In fact, a trust he created in 2016 actually held the majority of his assets such as image rights, future income, and royalties. Therefore, he was far richer than his will suggested. His daughter, Ariane, is the beneficiary of his trust.
On June 8, 2018, Bourdain was found unresponsive in a French hotel room by his friend and fellow chef Eric Ripert. His cause of death was ruled a suicide by hanging.
Following the news, Argento posted a statement on Twitter which read: “His brilliant, fearless spirit touched and inspired so many, and his generosity knew no bounds. He was my love, my rock, my protector. I am beyond devastated.”
