How Natalie Alyn Lind Learned to Sing for ‘Tell Me A Story’ Season 2

Tell Me A Story takes Natalie Alyn Lind from the superhero world of The Gifted to the fairy tale world of Kevin Williamson. Season 2 of Tell Me A Story tackles princess myths like Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella in a modern context. It looks like Lind’s story will be the riff on Beauty and the Beast

Lind plays Ashley Rose Pruitt, a country music star who suffers an accident. Viewers of the season premiere already saw Lind’s facial injuries, and still photos CBS released showed them in advance. Now, how Tell Me A Story treats her like a “beast” will unfold throughout the season. As for playing a singer, Lind added new skills to her repertoire.

She spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet at CBS’s party for the Television Critics Association, after the network presented a panel with the cast of season 2. New episodes of Tell Me A Story premiere Thursdays on CBS All Access.

Natalie Alyn Lind took singing and guitar lessons for ‘Tell Me a Story’

When Ashley sings on Tell Me A Story, you’ll be hearing the real Natalie Alyn Lind. Lind knew the role would require more than just acting and she was excited to take on the extra responsibilities.

“It was kind of something that I took on as I booked the show,” Lind said. “I always loved singing but I’ve never really done it professionally so when this opportunity came about, it was kind of something where I was a little bit afraid at first but then I kind of jumped into it.”

She’ll play the guitar for real too.

“When the show started happening, they wanted to make sure that I was prepared as possible,” Lind said. “So I pretty much just went into the best singing coaches, the best guitar coaches that I can. I think it all happened pretty fast.”

Natalie Alyn Lind may reveal more skills as ‘Tell Me A Story Continues’

Learning to sing and play guitar was a tall order in the few months Natalie Alyn Lind had between The Gifted ending and starting Tell Me A Story. As the season goes on, Lind hinted she might learn even more musical skills.

“Se’s a singer, she plays guitar,” Lind said. “We’re kind of experimenting with what else she really does but yeah, she’s a singer.”

You’ll hear original music in ‘Tell Me A Story’

All the Ashley Rose Pruitt songs you hear on Tell Me A Story are originals. Tell Me A Story is not a musical, but when they wrote a story about a singer, they went to the extra effort to create her songs for the show.

“We have all new original songs for the show,” Lind said.

Great music was important to show where Ashley was at the top of her career, when the show begins. Of course, it’s all darkness from here.

“Yes, my character is a country pop star who kind of has the world in her fingertips until something crazy happens, very traumatic and her life changes completely,” Lind teased.
