Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip, is the longest-serving royal consort in history and the oldest member of the royal family. Now deep in his 90s, the Duke of Edinburgh is still said to be in very good health. His only recent health-related issues came in June 2017 and April 2018.

In 2017, he was taken to a hospital and treated for an infection. Then, in 2018, he was admitted to the King Edward VII Hospital for pre-planned hip replacement surgery. Within a few weeks of that operation, the duke was up and about and even attended the wedding of his grandson, Prince Harry, when he married Meghan Markle in May 2018.

Prior to that, The Sun noted that Philip had “a stent in his heart a few years ago, but he loves fishing and sometimes stands for hours in the River Dee. For his age he’s as fit as a fiddle.”

With no signs of any major problems at this stage in his life many have wondered just how good Prince Philip’s genetics are. Here’s the answer to how long his parents actually lived and what the average life expectancy is in the United Kingdom.

Life expectancy in the United Kingdom

According to The Office for National Statistics, the average life expectancy in the U.K. is just under 80 for men and just under 83 for women.

Philip was born in 1921 and his wife was born in 1926 so they have each surpassed the average lifespan.

What age was Prince Philip’s father when he died?

Prince Philip’s father was Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark. He was separated from his son and his wife for years due to the effects of war.

When Philip’s mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and committed to an asylum, Prince Andrew took up residence in Monaco. He died in 1944 at the Hotel Metropole in Monte Carlo of heart failure and arteriosclerosis. He was 62 years old.

What age was Philip’s mother when she died?

The duke’s mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg. She actually lived with Philip and Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in London when she passed away in 1969. Princess Alice was 84 years old when she died.

How long did his siblings live?

Prince Philip had four sisters. They are all now deceased.

Princess Cecilie of Greece and Denmark, who was third child and daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, died tragically in a plane crash in 1937 when she was just 26 years old.

Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark, who was the second child and daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, passed away in 1969 at the age of 63.

Princess Margarita, who was the eldest child and daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, died in 1981 when she was 76.

And, Princess Sophie of Greece and Denmark, who was the fourth child and youngest daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, was Philip’s last surviving sister. She passed away in 2001 when she was 87 years old.
