USWNT co-captain Carli Lloyd‘s name has been in the headlines a lot lately as she and the rest of the ladies on the U.S. women’s soccer team have dominated the competition. However, after a 13-0 rout by Lloyd and her teammates in a game against Thailand, the women received some criticism for their post-goal celebrations and were accused of running up the score.
Lloyd responded to her critics in the next game against Chile in which she celebrated her first-half goal with a polite golf clap.
“I can’t take credit for it. I’m not sure if Lindsey [Horan] is taking credit for it,” Lloyd said after a 3-0 victory. “She had told me if we score, that’s what we’re going to do, so I just went along with it after I did my little celebration. But it was fun. I think it made a statement on the sideline there. It was cool.”
With so much attention on the soccer star, people have had a ton of questions about Lloyd including how old she is, where she grew up, and who her husband is. Here’s more on that the two-time Olympic gold medalist and the man she’s married to.
Carli Lloyd’s age
Carli Anne Lloyd was born on July 16, 1982, in Delran, New Jersey, to parents Stephen and Pamela. She has two siblings, a brother Stephen and a sister Ashley.
Lloyd gained an interest in soccer at a very early age and actually learned to play the game when she was 5.
“At that age, it was coed and Carli was hanging with the boys. She always loved it and showed a great ability at an early age, but she also has always worked very hard,” her mom, Pam, explained.
Lloyd played soccer for her high school team and was named the girls’ High School Player of the Year twice. She went on to play the sport in college for Rutgers Univesity where she became the school’s all-time leading scorer.
Lloyd made her USWNT debut on July 10, 2005, and is now one of the game’s most decorated and successful players. She’s a World Cup Champion with two gold medals, a Golden Ball Trophy, and a Silver Boot. Lloyd was also named U.S. Soccer Player of the Year in 2008, Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year in 2012, and FIFA’s Women’s Player of the Year in 2015.
Who she’s married to?
It makes sense that Lloyd celebrated with a golf clap since she’s married to professional golfer Brian Hollins.
According to People, the two were high school sweethearts and got engaged in 2013 after dating for 15 years. Hollins proposed with a cushion-cut engagement ring that was set in a triple-shank diamond band. The pair said “I do” three years later in Puerto Morelos, Mexico, in front of 75 friends and family members. Lloyd noted that she was a “low-key bride.”
“I’m not really that difficult,” she told The Knot ahead of her wedding. “I just want to have a good time with everybody, I just want to have a good night. I want my hair and makeup to look great [and] my dress to be beautiful. But other than that, I’m not too particular.”
Because Hollins plays professional sports himself, he can certainly spot a competitor when he sees one and calls his wife the “most competitive person” he knows.
“He laughs because he says I always go in harder against him, and I’m like, ‘No, you always go harder against me,’” Lloyd said via Sports Illustrated. “It gets heated, we’ll lay each other out. You know, it’s fun, we get to banter. We get to be outside the relationship lovey-dove type of thing and go battle.”
