How Old is Ellen DeGeneres, and When Did She Begin Her Career in Comedy?

Ellen DeGeneres is best known as the funny, over-the-top host of the talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show. DeGeneres is also well known as one of the first publicly out women in Hollywood. She married her wife, Portia de Rossi, on August 16, 2008 after being together for five years. This year the couple celebrated a decade of marriage and 15 years as a couple.

How old is Ellen DeGeneres?

Ellen DeGeneres is 60 years old this year. She was born on January 26, 1958 in Metairie, Louisiana, which is a suburb of New Orleans. Her mother, Betty, was a speech therapist, and her father, Elliott, was an insurance salesman. When the couple divorced in 1974, DeGeneres moved with her mother to Atlanta, Texas.

It was after dropping out of college that DeGeneres began her foray into comedy. Her first attempts were not very successful, and included a supporting role on two flunked television shows in the early 1990s. In 1994, DeGeneres finally got a break when she starred in a comedy series called Ellen.

The show was successful for a number of seasons, until it made major headlines in 1997 with Ellen DeGeneres revealed she was a lesbian. Her character on the show did the same. Unfortunately, Ellen suffered from dropping viewer rates the following season and was canceled as a result. From that point, DeGeneres returned to stand-up comedy before eventually landing her spot on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“The Ellen DeGeneres Show”

The Ellen DeGeneres Show aired in 2003 and was an instant success. The talk show is on the much lighter side of things when compared to other modern talk shows. It features segments about real people with extraordinary talents or stories, musical performers, interviews, pranks, and games which the audience can participate.

The talk show won unprecedented awards within the industry. In the first three seasons, The Ellen DeGeneres Show won 15 Emmy’s. It was also the first talk show in history to win the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show in its first three seasons.

Two personalities: one real, the other for her show

DeGeneres has created a reputation for herself on her talk show as a funny woman who dances, jokes, and is all-around bubbly or goofy. While this is a piece of the woman’s real personality, it isn’t the whole story. Recently, Ellen DeGeneres has made headlines with statements she may cancel her talk show because she’s tired of being expected to always be happy.

According to recent interviews with DeGeneres and her wife, Portia De Rossi, the comedian is much different in person. DeGeneres in real life is significantly more quiet, shy, and introspective than fans would believe. The dual personalities have begun to tire DeGeneres, which is why she finally agreed to a series of rare interviews.
