Pete Buttigieg, or “Mayor Pete,” is running for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2020 United States Presidential Election. Even though the Democratic Party is crowded is with several politicians in the race, Mayor Pete has consistently stood out.
Voters seem to resonate with the young politicians’ common political views, easy-to-understand speaking style, and strong military background. However, his age, sexuality, and current inability to connect with black voters may hold him back.

Born Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg in South Bend, Indiana, on January 19, 1982, he is currently 37-years-old. The young politician performed well in school and was valedictorian of his 2000 senior class.
Also, as a senior, he won first prize in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum’s Profiles in Courage essay contest for his piece about the political courage of independent politician Bernie Sanders.
Buttigieg then attended Harvard University, where he majored in history and literature, and graduated magna cum laude in 2004. In 2007, the politician also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with first-class honors from Pembroke College, Oxford, where he also was an editor for the prestigious Oxford International Review.
After graduation, Buttigieg began working for democratic campaigns and assisted Joe Donnelly’s successful congressional campaign in 2006.

While volunteering for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2007, the politician decided to join the military. In 2009, he became an ensign in the United States Navy Reserve to start training to become a naval intelligence officer.
After losing the 2010 Indiana State Treasurer election, Buttigieg was elected as the mayor of his hometown in 2011. Buttigieg became the second-youngest mayor in South Bend history at the age of 29 years old.
In 2014, he requested another term as mayor but had to take a seven-month leave to deploy to Afghanistan. His work overseas earned him the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award.
After reaching the rank of lieutenant, Buttigieg was honorably discharged in 2017. In December 2018, Buttigieg chose not to serve as mayor for a third term and instead announced that he was running for the President of the United States as a Democratic nominee.
If Buttigieg wins the election, he will be the youngest and first openly gay president.
Is Pete Buttigieg married?
Buttigieg came out as gay in a June 2015 South Bend Tribune piece. Therefore, he became Indiana’s first openly gay elected executive, the first elected Indiana official to come out while in office, and the highest elected Indiana official to ever come out as gay.
In 2017, the politician announced his engagement to a middle school teacher, Chasten Glezman. The two met on dating app, Hinge, and had been dating since August 2015.
On June 16, 2018, the couple married, and Glezman took Buttigieg’s last name in April 2019. Queerty named Buttigieg as one of it’s “Pride50”, which are people distinguished as “trailblazing individuals who actively ensure society remains moving towards equality, acceptance, and dignity for all queer people.”
